Re: Horror/Sci-Fi movies you must see.
It really depends on the individual movie because the label horror seems to be slapped on so many different movies. For me a horror movie is a step above a thriller, because they have the same basis and are going after the same kind of tension building and climax. Horror is more "out there" to me. A good horror movie has to really draw me in to the movie and create an atmosphere that while it is all outlandish, its still pretty damn creepy.

Re: Horror/Sci-Fi movies you must see.
Yeah nowadays.....newer generation of so called horror movies are more gore then actual horror. That is why I always laugh at kids today when they say the Saw movies are some of the best horror movies ever.
When in reality Saw is gore, not horror, there is a difference.
Horror is movie that scares the crap out of you from the atmosphere, the sound effects, stuff that you didn't expect to see happen. The Exorcist is the scariest movie for its time because it was the 1st movie to ever talk about possession on that scale.
Now.......honestly I ever seen a true horror movie since the 1980s. Everything in the 90s, and this past decade was nothing but gore movies labeled as horror.
Some how, some way people got the notion the more blood splatter on the screen the more horror it is. When really it just makes the movie look stupid and just makes it a gore movie.Comment

I don't agree with there is no "true" horror movie nowadays. The Descent is great, I love the atmosphere once they get into the caves. 28 Days Later is another good one. Also, if you want more atmosphere and creepy, you should check out House of the Devil.

The Descent was that movie with the cave creatures that were like bat humans right ? They were flying around and what not in the dark, picking them off one by one and they had to swim out through this long tunnel to reach open water right ?Comment

Spoiler
They were climbing around, not flying. Plus they were blind and had a heightened sense of hearing, but it didn't appear like they were using sonar. I don't recall seeing that scene from the last part of your post.

Re: Horror/Sci-Fi movies you must see.
I think the remake for The Last House on the Left was actually very well done by horror movie standards. It was very serious in tone, was gruesome without going overboard, and was rather elemental in scope. Unfortunately it was a remake of a rather crappy original (even the story isn't the absolute best) and I think the antagonists were a bit clichéd when it came to their bad antics, but aside from the last couple of minutes into the movie which seemed to be "added on" in Hollywood fashion I am very surprised it flew under everyone's radar when it came to an actually pretty good horror movie. The cinematography was wonderful and I think it could easily be classified as a "horror" like the old 70s movies.
I feel the exact same way with The Strangers. It was very simple, but very well done.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

The original Last House on the Left was far from crappy. Til this day people talk about that movie for it's brutal nature especially for the time it was filmed (early 70's)Comment

Another one I would add is The Stranger's. Stuff that could really happen is the **** that really gets to me.

As for foreign films both Old Boy and Let the Right One In are great movies. I don't know if either one is really and truly scary though. My 2K17 Boston Celtics MyLeague
