Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

Whatever babying I may have to do , the picture I have on this TV right now is insane. It is like 3d depth, and has made the BCS games a pleasure..and they are broadcast in 720p. 1080p broadcasts are simply unreal. Smokes my LCD completely.

The LG plasma I got is a 2011 edition, so maybe that is why it seems to operate trouble free so far(knocks on wood).

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

LOL @ people claiming plasma owners need to baby their sets therefore they prefer to spend more on LCD or LED and get less quality over plasma

Sure LCD and LED have improved big time and are inching closer to Plasma in terms of PQ but not enough to warrant charging more when their off angle viewing is straight garbage compare to Plasma

Not to mention the blacks and colors on plasma are a package

On an LED or LCD you might get incredible blacks but the colors are not as good as plasma or great colors but the blacks not being as great as plasma.

If you do not fall asleep every day with a huge static logo on the screen then you have no issues with plasma

The I.R I had with the Madden score ticker is long gone already.

I also don't limit the amount of hours I play games, only watch full screen movies, use the pixel shifter, run slides, or any of that avs nonsense. I have accidentally left my tv on a static image overnight when I've fallen asleep and there wasn't any hint of burn-in.

I'm not offended if someone doesn't want a plasma but with so many people coming into this thread looking for advice, they shouldn't be worrying about things that are not real issues.
To say Burn-in and Image retention is not a issue is FALSE. You can GOOGLE burn-in/Image retention+ Plasma 2011 and get an idea that EVEN newer Plasmas have the problem. Is it better than it used to be? YES. If it wasn't an issue, then pixel shifter feature and such wouldn't exist.

I can go to google and find people who say that it is and isn't an issue but I'm going off of my own experience having just bought a new plasma.

You are saying don't even make it a consideration....which is not smart at all. You have to consider it if you are using it for gaming or pc use. Maybe it's not the #1 factor....

I've never had any problems and the T.V. shuts itself off it you leave it on long enough.

I posted a few months ago about how my brother purchased a samsung LED for $1,800. He returned it because it didn't match the picture quality he was seeing on my $749 plasma. Everyone has their opinions and that's cool but I can't see myself gaming on anything else but a plasma from now on.

It should not be the main consideration and it is not nearly as much of an issue in new tv's. There are people who believe that you have to baby a plasma tv or you'll have burn-in, which isn't true at all. Manufacturers have precautions in place in case it happens but it is not an issue like it was in the past, and like I said earlier, I don't baby my tv at all and I've had no issues.

Plasma is the way to go..thanks to this thread I only spent $700 on a sale LG 1080p plasma.

                  Seriously worth it!!!

also is really distinct at how the pro settings are so deep. Natural tendency is to go for the washed out presets, but if you can dig up the pro config settings, it is so much better on your eyes and looks so incredibly accurate.

Do you realize that burn in can happen on an LCD? Does that mean we should not buy one because there is a chance it can happen on an LCD as well.

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

I am starting to get in the market to replace my main TV. It is a 56 inch Samsung DLP that is starting to show its age. I don't have a preference on LCD/LED/Plasma, but am leaning towards plasma for the combination of picture quality and price. I'd be looking at having a max of $1,000 but would prefer to keep it in the $850 range.

The TV would be used for movies, TV watching and gaming. I'd prefer something ~50inches and 3D would be an added bonus but isn't needed. Anyone have any suggestions on brands or specific sets? I don't care at all where I get the TV from and am fine ordering online. Any help would be appreciated!

The incidence if t happening on an LCD is much less than a plasma but my main concern with a plasma is the stupid glare screen. It makes watching TV during the day (and even at night with a lamp behind you) really annoying. The plasmas might have the better picture but damn if I could tell because all I see is reflections half the time.

Is there any particular reason why plasma manufacturers insist on glare screens instead of matte? Is it a manufacturing requirement because I would gladly take a slight decrease in picture quality in a plasma if it could come with a matte screen.

If you absolutely insist on not going over $1000 (which I do not recommend on sets over 50" in size) then your best bet is the Samsung PN51D550. You can pick that set up for $900 which is an outstanding value, but for just a few hundred dollars more you can get the PN51D7000 which is the smaller version of the TV that was rated as the best TV of the year by CNET. Four of us on this forum have one of the 7000 series sets (I have the 64" myself) and all of us gave it glowing reviews and none of us have had any issues with any IR or burn in.

There are plenty of LCD screens with non matte screens. The current high end plasmas are not matte but have a sweet reflective filter on it. My set does not reflect anything.

Funny thing actually.... The only TV with burn in issues in my house right now is my 27 inch Bravia I have in my bedroom. We dont have it hooked up to a HD box so the SD picture doesnt always fill the screen. After a while the sides are distorted.

Any tv can go bad if it's mistreated so it's not like LCDs and LEDs are care free.
