Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

Well, I think I'm returning the Vizio 55" XVT553SV I purchased back in the beginning of January. I love the tv (absolutely the best picture I think I've ever seen), but I'm having cold start issues. The picture is distorted or jaggy when I first start it up. It stays that way for almost a minute. In addition, I'm having frequent issues with the picture when I first turn on the PS3. I get a very wavy rainbow looking picture also for about a minute and then it clears up eventually. For what I paid, I shouldn't have to deal with these issues.

So, I'm contemplating looking at a different tv possibly with an attempt to save some money as well. Plasmas are pretty much a no go as I have a lot of ambient light in our family room, although much of my viewing is at night. Does anyone have an edge lit LCD they're happy with? I've looked at the Sony EX500 LCD on more than a few occasions, but it's rather bulky and I feel like it's yesterday's technology. I've got to stay off the AVS forums as it's just confusing the heck out of me!

I would not dismiss regular LCD panels, they are very mature technology and in a lot of cases look better than edge-lit sets.

I agree that the EX500 is bulky and even bulkier when it comes to the 55" version. I don't think you can go wrong with a CCFL LCD, there seems to be a lot of deals right now as stores are trying to clear inventory since the new sets should be out any day/week now.

Thanks guys. I may just try and exchange my model for the same one first to see if it's only my hdtv. If not, can you guys suggest any decent 55" LCDs, non edge-lit?

THX mode is awesome for games. Another great piece of advice.... Thanks.

LG has several 55" LEDs in the $1300-1400 price range. There are also quite a few "dumb" CCFL LCDs that are obviously much cheaper. Just do a Amazon search for "55 inch lcd"

by "dumb" i mean no internet apps, wifi connection

Just stay away from edge lit LED'S

And the advantage of LED would be color accuracy is better and power consumption is much better for the wallet

What is your budget and I will find some of the better ones and you can decide from there

For CCFL, I would stick with Samsung LNC630/ LNC650 (ultra clear panel) or Sony KDL-EX500.

Hey guys I'm clueless about this sort of this so I was wondering if I used this:

on my regular non 3D 55' Sammy LED will it be "true" 3D of just a poor version of it?

Personally, I would be very skeptical, especially at that low price point. But who knows.

Assuming that it did work reasonably well, you'd still be losing half the resolution b/c it doesn't use active shutter glasses.

yeah I figured because of the dodgy looking glasses there is no way it could be the same standard as a 'true' 3D setup. Thanks for the advice.

I'm not buying it by the way but I was sent the link by a buddy of mine and he was asking me what I thought (don't ask me why I'm not very knowledgeable about this sort of thing).

As a side note, LG is one of the companies trying to come up with 3DTVs that use passive glasses. They'd be about $10-15 each vs. the $90-150 active shutter glasses.

Again, you'd be losing half the resolution but it would be brighter and flicker free. Only a 4K resolution set would get you back to 1080p.

Looking for some advice. I am a few days away from cutoff date on purchasing the extended warranty. BBY is offering a 2 year for $145 on the G20, should I jump on it? I have never owned a plasma so not sure if there can be issues down the road.
