The good thing now is that the plasma will be going into a room where I have complete control of the lighting which should be even better.

      Yeah, LOL! I agree 100%.

The very first LCD I ever bought, which was a 23" Samsung kind of took a crap again this past week. I had the HDMI ports repaired once already on this thing under warranty and now they just went again + the component ports do not work either. This is the set my kids used to play the Wii when we had it and now the PS3 in my sons bedroom. Sucks that the neither HDMI or Component hook ups are working. We went and bought a 22" Polaroid LED from Target for $180 which should be enough for them. What is up with HDMI ports going bad? We also have a Westinghouse LCD where both HDMI ports have gone bad, but all other inputs work fine. Is this a common problem?

Might be that tv, I have had Samsungs all my life and never had HDMI issues

I usually sold them when a new model that caught my eye came out.

I also had a Westinghouse which I gave to my mom and it is still running strong going on 6 years or so.

But Samsung is ****ty from what I hear about fixing issues like this.

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

giants or captain i was looking through the thread and was trying to find your recommendation on breaking in my new plasma samsung. its a 4 series 720 p.

i took it off of dynamic mode and even on torch settings playing games like nhl and mlb 2k felt darkened or grey. friend told me to check this forum out for advice.

any help on what settings to run for break in, and what i should do. i got some settings off one site but im not sure they are the best. its in a low light room for the most part but is just noticeable less bright then my tv prior. any advice would be appreciated. thanks

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

It's going to be darker, especially first out the gate while you are breaking it in. LCDs are generally brighter...just the nature of the technology.

Once you get past that first 150 hours or so, you can up the contrast and that is when your tv will shine.

For the most part, blacks on a Samsung are not going to be as dark as a Panasonic.

Game nailed it right for you a few posts above.

Have you taken a look at AVS for good break-in slides and settings to use for your set?

Those settings sound about right and I think you should be good. I would recommend running the TV over night if you feel comfy doing that. It helps in speeding up the process.

I have a Panasonic, so my settings are going to be different to the Samsungs. If one thing, I would maybe lower the contrast a little to lower 50's till you reach that 150-200 hour mark and then you can bring it back up again.

Be very careful with the Cartoon Network due to the logo. I have read stories on AVS where people got bad IR with it on their sets. Just do yourself a favor and save the headache, run the slides. It will break the TV in very evenly if done properly.

In the market for a new tv and I'm looking at this one.

With tax and shipping and 2 yr replacement plan it is $730. And it seems to be getting good reviews.

Seems like a good deal on the tv. However, that replacement plan is too expensive. Get 5 years for $20 more with this one from Sharp (sold on amazon)
