Are you going for a plasma or lcd? The reason why I ask is that if you go with one of these cheaper 720p sets, there isn't a good anti glare screen on there. I know this is your man cave and probably can control the lighting to a degree if you put curtains and or blinds over those windows. Look at any 720p plasma set, they are like looking at a mirror.......the glare sucks big time. Personally, if you have the money to buy 2 50" 720p sets......why not get a decent 1080p 50-51" plasma with that money and use the rest to get a smaller set? It's your money man, but buying a set that you might not be happy with down the road is not a good thing since upgrading later might be a problem. I see you have a 360 which has many games at 1080p, would take advantage of a 1080p set.

I saw the Panny ST30 for $1169 at BBY last week which is a good price for that plasma and has received good reviews from owners on AVS. Not sure how the Sammy counterparts to the 2011 Panny's hold up in the same price range.
yeah, all in all if i buy 2 Panny 50's, extra 10% off this Sunday at Sears, it will run lke 1300. already got a mount from a friend that will handle any of these tv's im looking at.

the same buddy has a similar set up to our room, picture above, and doesn't have an issue with his Plasma.

so, you are saying that with this model below..

    Panasonic 50" Class Viera® X3 Series Plasma HDTV ($719)
    http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...41000P?prdNo=1

its gonna have a very bad glare?

like i said above, i feel more safe going with say that 50 plasma in living room bc of my son, could damage the lcd screen easier in that room. maybe then i spend a lil extra and get a solid 46 inch led lcd for my man room?

If you are sitting 10 feet away from the TV I would recommend at least a 50 inch screen.

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

I'm a plasma fan in general and a Panasonic plasma fan in particular. This is assuming you can properly control the lighting or will be using it mainly in the late evening and at night. The only time glare is going to be an issue is when the tv is off. I could care less then.

I bought a 50" 720p LG plasma for around $600 almost 2 years ago and couldn't be happier. I don't sit close enough to where 1080p would be a real benefit (would have added another $200-250 to the price tag).

I went for size than choosing a smaller 42" 1080p set for the same money.

Based on what you said, the plasmas sound like the way to go.

IMO, plasmas do a much better job of giving that "wow" factor especially when talking about sports and fast moving content.

I saw the X3 at BBY when it first came out early last month and was not impressed by the picture and the glare wasn't good either. What I would do since the source at a BBY or Sears sucks, bring your 360 with and ask to hook it up. They are usually pretty good about allowing people to hook their PS3 or 360 up to a set before buying and see if it makes you happy or not. I did that with a few sets before settling with the Panasonic G20 which I absolutely love.

While this set is not top of the line, it is much better than the X3 at $200 more. It is the Panny S30 @ $989 and Sears might have it cheaper too.

Yeah, I hate trusting "them" when I can discern it on a 32" TV with ease.

But the other thing you should consider is if you're looking for two HDTV's that are similar models but one is 1080p, that is more than likely the superior TV anyway. It's why I could suggest to people that they should buy a 3DTV even if they don't use 3D. They're still walking out with a TV that is superior in 2D than regular HDTV's. Same argument here: although you may not use 1080p much, your 720p will still look better than other 720p-native televisions.

Yah, we will definitely let people hook up a source if they bring it in. For some people, that's really the only way they feel comfortable making a purchase. It sure beats the heck out of taking the thing home and then realizing you hate it.

it looks like with the extra 10% off at Sears on Sunday the Panny S30 should be $890!! at the worst $949..

looks like im pulling the trigger on 2 of these..

No problem, just trying to steer you in the right direction. I've seen the X3 a few times and just was not impressed by it at all. The picture alone looks just way too dark and the mirror like screen without an anti-reflective coating on it is just terrible.

If you had money for the ST30, now that would be a nice set and has gone for $1169 at times on sale like I stated earlier. I understand your trying to get 2 50" sets, so it makes sense what your trying to do.

one last thing before i pull the trigger..

what if i went with this 54 inch for the living room?

thoughts on that compared to the 50 S30? i get 4 more inches of screen size for 10 bucks more.. this will be to big in the rec room, but could be solid in living room.

The S30 is much better than the S2, but for that price at 4 more inches might tempting.

+1 In a living room, you want as big a set as you can get/afford.

Guys, I need some help, I want to get the samsung 51 in plasma 3d tv that's on sale this week, but I want to hold out on a package deal. Like tv w/ glasses and blu ray, bc they have had those deals bf. My price range is about 1,000. Idk if I should get the tv now or wait for a better deal next week. I know that the price of active shutter glasses is going to drop on may 1st. I was thinking there would be some good drops then.

Anyone who can help would b greatly appreciated. My wife just wants me to make a decision and shut up about it. Lol
