Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

I came into this thread to see if anyone could recommend a set of new TV's that mentions high quality capacitors. But I searched the thread and didn't find anything. So I'll take this time for a little PSA.

I just want to recommend to anyone reading this, don't buy a Samsung TV. Ever.

Some of you who have Samsung TV's are probably thinking I'm crazy. I understand. Up until about two weeks ago I would of thought the same thing. I don't know how many of you are aware of the Capacitor Plague. I wasn't until recently. Then my Samsung TV died, and I found out all about it.

I have a Samsung plasma, HP-T4234. It's about 3-4 years old. My TV continuously get's stuck in a restart cycle. Come to find out, Samsung put in bad capacitors in the TV. However, they weren't the only company. Probably the most prevalent, but not the only ones. I understand, companies make goofs, errors in technology. So I expected Samsung to learn from their lesson.

A class action lawsuit was brought against Samsung, so Samsung has since offered to repair TV's free of cost. However, about 1/8th of the TV's with the problem are being covered. Only the one's mentioned in the first class action. After researching information about several additional and ongoing class action lawsuits aimed towards Samsung. I have found out that as late as April 11, 2011, Samsung still and knowingly uses faulty unsatisfactory capcitors in TV's. WTF!?

I'm not sure if they've changed their ways since then, but I doubt it. I'll never buy another Shamsung product again. Not a phone, tablet, TV, anything.

If you're interested in learning more about this or validating my claim, search "Samsung TV capacitors" or "Samsung TV restart" in Google, YouTube, CNET forums, etc. To anyone that has a Samsung. Best of luck. You'll be in my prayers. To anyone considering a Shamsung. Please, choose another brand.

P.S. Here's a video of some old guy talking about it on YouTube. This is very similar to my experience. I'm fed up. Repairing the capacitors isn't the only issue. Some motherboards have to be replaced. If you have any questions or comments, PM me because I probably won't check this thread again.

You still have it in Vivid mode>?

Bless your eyes. The tv is good but those issues bug me to no end.

Maybe a firmware will help fix it but I highly doubt it.

If you really want to get the scoop on the tv then head over to AVS or better yet HighDef Junkies. Some of the best calibrators on that site will tell you of the issues with this tv which stinks because the tv itself is very sexy and slim and has deep blacks.

        What size did you get?

You cannot discredit a company because some folks have bad sets.

This is nothing new in regards to the Samsung capacitor plague.

I have 2 Sammy plasmas for more then 5 years and no issue whatsoever. My parents have samsungs and nothing.

Samsungs are the most sold tv's....For a reason

That is a 4+ year old model (before they implemented the A, B, C, D codes for model year) and is also a lower end series. The technology has dramatically changed since then. I have a LN40A750 that I have had for three years that still works like a charm.

Coming from a person who's worked on TVs for over 14 years, I would not fault Samsung alone for these capacitors. Capacitors go bad for various reasons: poor circuit design, normal usage, user error, etc. I've seen those same looking failures for caps on older sets (from 30 years ago) to newer sets (released within the past couple of years). I'm not going to begin speculating that these companies are purposely using bad capacitors because you're opening up a can of worms without much to back up the claims. And when you think about the fact that many of these boards from the HP-T4234 show up in different brands of TVs (the boards in your set can be found in different Samsung, Philips, or Magnavox models), it's tough to fault one single manufacturer for these failures. What it comes down to is that TVs break down. It's very natural, happens all the time. If you think your TV will last the rest of your lifetime, you're only kidding yourself. These things are being designed to produce the best overall viewing experience to the best of the set's capabilities for a limited amount of time. In the end, electronic components break down (some much faster than others). It's the sad truth. But if you're looking for someone to blame, blame the entire television manufacturing industry (not just one company).

I've only had 1 Samsung LCD fail on me and it was the board with the HDMI and Component hookups. It was replaced once and failed again about 1.5 years later. It was one of the earlier model LCD's and would not prevent me from buying Samsung again in the future. I would have a Samsung right now if it wasn't a good deal that I had found my G20 at the time.

I hope you are right about the FW, I heard that it was released in Europe but no word on the US

If it fixes the gama which I doubt but fixes the FB then this set is incredible

55 inch. I watched Lord of the Rings on Blu-Ray yesterday and it looks amazing. Great colors, excellent picture. I'm not going to investigate any issue further. Again, I don't doubt what you are saying as I'm sure there are some issues. I just have not noticed them. What is a big deal to one is not to another.

A great example of this was the Samsung LED/LCD I traded in. I guarantee 99 out of 100 people would never notice this light banding that this TV has, but I do, especially when I play video games. The Panasonic does not have any banding whatsoever. And the issues it does have are so small I am not picking up on them. I have 20/20 vision so I don't think its my eyes. Does the problem exist on all GT31's?

Again, I don't doubt what you are saying as I'm sure there are some issues. I just have not noticed them. What is a big deal to one is not to another.

A great example of this was the Samsung LED/LCD I traded in. I guarantee 99 out of 100 people would never notice this light banding that this TV has, but I do, especially when I play video games. The Panasonic does not have any banding whatsoever. And the issues it does have are so small I am not picking up on them. I have 20/20 vision so I don't think its my eyes. Does the problem exist on all GT31's?

Good news. If you contact Panasonic they will send you a fw fix. You got the same set as me and I will call them to see what they will do. I got 55 as well but the GT30 which does not have the glasses and avatar. That is why yours is GT31.

I locked out and got it on amazon for $1450 delivered. Now they have it for $1950

If I get the FW fix then is s keeper.
