LCD or OLED? - The TV Thread

I understand that, but basically what I meant was this:
With my LCD screen, if I lower my brightness level then I will get deeper blacks (not saying much), but the trade-off is that those blacks will really crush so that I can't discern shadow detail. I could always just raise the brightness, but then there go my "deep" blacks.
With a good plasma screen, I can still have my brightness setting relatively higher than I would need with an LCD, and yet have much deeper blacks. Raising this brightness will allow for good shadow delineation, while I can still have inky blacks (maybe not to .0001 standards, but still very dark).
Fast Forward to LED LCD & you get better black levels. Then you have Edge-Lit LED & Full Array LED. Between these 2. You'll get Plasma like Black Levels from Full Array LED when it uses a technique called "Local Dimming"
Right now the Best Full Array LED are Sony hx929 & Sharp/Pioneer Elite

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
What I have is suitable, for this television. All I was saying was that these blacks just don't get very dark, at least compared to that of a plasma. I shouldn't even try and replicate that image, so I'll play to the LCD's strengths instead.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Yea Plasmas have better black levels but like BFJ stated the higher end LCD or LED have come close to matching the Plasma black levels.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
Just bought a 60" LG Plasma and am wondering why and how vital it is to watch non HD programming in the 16:9 format and not the 4:3 format so the whole screen is filled up with picture. Will I harm my TV if I don't do this? Thanks!Comment

You are likely to see some image retention but that is normal and goes away very quickly.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
My choice is still Plasma , my 50' LG Plasma is still very beautiful as it was when I bought almost 2 years ago, my gaming looks fantastic on it, I also have a LG 30' crt HDTV and that picture is still amazing, CRT produced the blacks blacks to date, and my plasma comes close to it, I'm not a big fan of LCD at all.N.Y Mets

Just bought the Samsung PN51D7000 and I managed to get it for over $400 off thanks to Vanns.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.
If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
But when gaming, use only 16:9 and not screen fit. This allows you to enable the pixel orbiter which protects against burn in or IR
Playing Madden caused me to get horrible IR of the score ticker on the top left which is still there 2 weeks later and it is not going away as easy as I thoughtComment

Great choice man. I had that one before trading it in for the 59 when Amazon had a great great deal

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
Yes I did, 100 hours running the slides. Very unhappy but I guess I have to continue running the orbiter until I clean it out. It is better then before but still enough to bother meComment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
After 100 I tweaked them to my liking but IR will happen regardless if you have a still image on screen like Madden long long long score board.
I played Madden a long time that day and noticed it the next day
The 2K one showed a bit but was done within a day. Just the madden one but mostly where the teams score is because it is back dropped in dark tone which shows more.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
I just bought my girlfriend a Samsung LN46D630 two days ago. I got it on sale for $639 marked down from $999 at Worst Lie. I'm no longer an LCD fan, but she is a real hippie when it comes to sucking up electricity and wanted an LCD so I grabbed her the best possible one that I could. It's crazy to think that just three years ago a comparable set cost $2000+.
In other news, the PN64D7000 is still kicking *** and taking names. By far the best TV I have ever owned.Comment
