Wondering if anyone here can help me out. I recently bought the Samsung UN46C8000, and I can't be sure if I have an issue or not. I've tried a bunch of different settings, but nothing seems to fix it.

My problem is that on fast moving scenes - especially sports where the camera moves quickly - it almost seems like the TV has about a 3" dark area, then a 3" light area. Almost like stripes across the entire screen, alternating between light and dark. It's kind of hard to describe in words, so I hope I was able to. It's not super noticeable, but now that I've seen it, I can see it all of the time. It is especially noticeable during hockey with the white ice as the background.

Does anyone have any ideas? I've thought about calling Samsung about it as well, but I'd like to try everything I can think of. The one thing I do want to try is going directly from my cable box to the TV - I go through my sound system now.

1) Try cable box to tv and see if it persists. It could be your receiver and not the tv.
2) If it does, call Samsung ASAP. If it's still under warranty find out the return policy.

If that is the LED, there might be some issues with the screen having issues. Like Game said, give Samsung a call or if its still within return period call the store you bought it from.

Have you tried your game system(s), Blu-ray, or DVD player also on this?

Yes, and I've noticed it on my PS3 as well. But like I said before, one last test is to hook things directly to the TV to see if the problem is in my sound system. I'll probably do that this weekend, and if no luck, then either call Samsung or Best Buy.

It could be the HDMI port going bad. I have an old Samsung LCD where the ports have gone bad yet again. You have to hold down the HDMI cable in a certain position for it to even register, even when it does, it the colors bleed.

I believe what you are noticing is the clouding issues that this particular model suffers from.

Did you install the latest firmware. I heard it helps but does not solve the issue.

This is due to the tv being edge lit and not local dimming tech

Would stripes across the screen be clouding? I thought that clouding is mainly light blotches.

Did not notice the strips part but it seems that the issue with light sports and dark spots are very much an issue with the Samsung edge lit led's

The strips is most likely the hdmi cable itself or the port.

Might want to try a diff hdmi cord and if that does not work then it most likely is the tv hdmi port.


I use to have that TV and returned it the day after due to the horrible clouding issues.

Yeah, the stripes I think might be HDMI port or cable related. Those blotches have to be clouding which is present in non uniform LCD's and non edge lit LED's.

I personally think that all the sets out there these days have one glaring flaw or another. From plasma to LED, nothing is perfect. It amazes me that we have to go in expecting issues which is a shame.

LED's are terrific if you buy the correct ones. Edge lite are no good but if you can find local dimming then those are by far better then LCD

I'm pretty sure this model is the local dimming one, which is one of the reasons I picked it. I found out that someone else at work has my model, so I've asked them to check it out as well.

I'll try some of the suggestions here as well with different cables and ports.

I'm pretty sure this model is the local dimming one, which is one of the reasons I picked it. I found out that someone else at work has my model, so I've asked them to check it out as well.

That tv is edge-lit LED-based LCD with local dimming which is not the same as


Samsung's local dimming, LED-based UNB8500



Here is the issues with that model:


subpar uniformity and off-angle viewing; lighter black levels than full-array local-dimming sets; black areas tinged bluer; 3D exhibited ghost images along edges (crosstalk); does not include 3D glasses; terrible remote.



Uniformity: The UNC8000 didn't perform well in this category. Brightness across its screen was more consistent than what we saw on the LG LH8500, but it still had some issues. The most noticeable in mid-bright and brighter areas looked like very faint vertical bands or varying brightness, which showed up most in pans over flat fields, such as the sky in the joyride from Chapter 2. We saw them relatively rarely, but such banding wasn't present on the other sets, aside from the LH8500.
The UNC8000 sample we reviewed also betrayed brighter corners and edges than the middle of the screen, a difference that was most apparent in dark scenes and areas like the letterbox bars. The brightness on the edges wasn't as severe as we saw on the Sony or the LG LH5500, and was about equivalent to that of the Samsung B7000.
Off-angle the UNC8000 also suffered about as badly as the other LCD displays in our lineup, with the exception of the relatively good LG LH8500. Its screen became discolored toward blue in dark areas when seen from either side (or above or below), darker areas washed out relatively quickly, and brightness variations became more visible.

This is exactly what I'm seeing. I had actually found and used those settings - with some tweaking - and they help a bit, but it is still noticeable. It's sounding like it is the design of the set rather than my individual one.

Yes it seems that way. If it bothers you that much then I would suggest you return it and exchange it for another model. Not cool wasting that much money on something that will be hampering your enjoyment.
