Not the same. In fact, I'm not sure what Smart Motion is, maybe smooth motion? If that's what you mean, then that is just a post processing gimmick on a TV that uses software to try to make motion smoother, but often it's not worth using.

Variable refresh rate is the ability for your TV to change it's refresh rate to match a game's refresh rate in real time. This eliminates screen tearing and graphical glitches.

It's really a game changer for gaming. If you are looking for a TV for gaming, I wouldn't get one without it.

I like Rtings because they aren't afraid to tell you the bad things. A lot of reviews will ignore them. It helps you make a more informed decision.
What would be considered a good rating then? I know it goes from 1-10, but clearly anything 9 or up seems to really just be the select few top of the line TVs on the market.

The 55 inch I have now has those older single stands in the middle of the TV. I just don't know if I trust moving it to my other stand and having it not tip over (since right now it's on a mount).

Smart motion is fake motion smoothing, still 60 hz, so it doesn’t matter.

This tv looks great for the price but you better have a warranty with your credit card or buy one. Just look at BBB and you will see why. If you get one that doesn't start failing in a few months, you should be ok but don't expect it to last a long time.

One of the reasons why I might just lean towards a brand I'm familiar with like LG or Samsung. At least with one like LG, even if I'm not getting some top of the line $1000+ TV, I know whatever one I do get is probably gonna end up like the others, a good several year purchase.

Keep in mind, they’re all entry level TVs. The Samsung will be brighter, LG will have better viewing angles. Pick your poison.

All Samsungs will be brighter than LGs?

I'm mainly just looking for durability more than anything. To me, at the end of the day a TV is a TV, although I do want to get the most out of whatever I'd pay. Not doing any gaming on it, mainly watching sports on it. I do have a swivel stand too so viewing angle isn't as important.

Speaking of the swivel stand, that's another thing I'm wondering about. The stand I have is listed as being able to hold TVs up to 55 inches, but this stand was also from 10 years ago when TVs were slightly bigger (frame wise at least). So I'm wondering if I actually could get a 60 inch or something since the TV might actually be the same size as my current 55 inch when you consider that both might end up being a similar length/width (since the 55 has a frame that's a few inches wide), but who knows if the TV would go on the mount.

Thanks for the info. I checked and IIRC it's called TruMotion. A lot of TV's that I've checked have this type of feature but have a native 60Hz refresh rate.

I checked Amazon and they have the Sony X85J and it says it's a true native 120Hz with variable refresh rate. I'm sort of leaning on this TV for my PS5 and Series X. Let me know what you guys think.

I've checked out a bunch online now. The Hisense U6G(U68G over here) seems like one of the best I've been able to find. Its $750 here (not on sale) which I think is between $500-$550USD, so it should be in the price range I'm looking at if it goes on sale for Black Friday (it's a 2021 model, so hopefully it goes on sale then).

From what I read, I think U6G=H8G so its probably the same as the one you linked, just diff year?

Is there really a problem with Hisense TVs that will cause it to fail within the first few months? The reviews I saw on rtings has it as one of the better ones in this price range.

Best Buy does have a 1 year warranty, so that should cover it incase of anything early on. Hopefully if I do get one, it can last at least several years.

It's the best TV you can get for the money, there is no questioning that. The picture is great and it is an android tv so you can get any app. The reliability isn't as good as larger brands. I would get a geek squad warranty so you can replace it if there are problems and not have to deal with Hisense. As long as you know what you are dealing with and don't wait after you get an issue, it will be fine.

Ours started having problems in 2 months or so. They replaced the power board which then caused sound issues. Then they replaced it again and didn't fix anything. Had to fight a bunch to get support to callback, everything has to go to level 2, etc. Eventually got them to send a check so we could replace it but it took a long time. Didn't want to deal with Hisense anymore just getting another Hisense would have lost the warranty and I would have lost my credit card coverage for 1 additional year.

Reliability is one of the big things for me as well. I can sacrifice quality if the TV might last a few years more. Are LG/Samsung the better ones to look at if we're talking reliability?

Possibly having to deal with the tv breaking and needing someone to fix it and all that within the first few months of getting it definitely wouldn't be something I would want to do, even if it's the best TV for the price.

If you get the Bestbuy warranty, you should be able to just bring it in and replace it. Scott can confirm that.

The LG and Samsung generally will have better quality and/or warranty but every brand can have problems in the lower price models. At that price range, you are going to lose a big amount in the picture quality. Check the reviews for the 2021 Hisense and see what people are reporting. I had the 2020 one, I think H9G, so the 2021 could have fixed the issues as these brands get better at making TVs.

I would get it for the price but make sure you have a warranty with Bestbuy that you can just replace it without having to deal with Hisense support. Unless you are stepping up into the LG or Sony OLED range at around $1,000-1,500, it is the best looking TV you can get.

I believe the default best buy warranty is 1 year. Seems like geeksquad warranty for 2 or more years (I'm guessing it's in addition to the 1) is where you start questioning if it's worth it. $150 for those 2 years.

No matter which one I get, it's likely either from best buy, or a major furniture store, so I'd imagine theres warranty for at least year 1.

The 1 year is with Hisense, the geek squad will cover more and may allow you to have Bestbuy deal with the problem instead of Hisense. Check with Scott though for their current coverage during the manufacturer 1 year warranty.
