LED HDTV come in 2 variety: fully array and edge lit. Full array has LEDs spread evenly behind the display vs. edge lit just has them along the perimeter. Full array is definitely preferred.

Traditional LCDs use CCFLs (cold cathode fluorescent lamps).

Looks like the CCFL HDTVs are slowly being phased out and LEDs will be the standard.
    Thanks alot!

      Re: Plasma or LCD?

I ended up selling the DLP today to a guy on ebay. He came from Indiana to pick it up. Sold it for $299 and then sold him the extra bulb I had for another $100.

I have seen plenty of TV's the last few weeks and going back and forth on either a 46" or 55". I feel like the 55" might be a bit too big and just thinking that the 46" might be too small coming from a 50". LOL! We will be sitting about 9 feet away from the TV when mounted to the wall. I ask my wife what she thinks and tells me whatever I think. LOL!

I'll tell you man, I was going for a 47" LED, sitting right at 10' away from it if it's pushed back in our entertainment stand. Wife suggested I opt for the 55", and I'm glad I did. It is a "big" tv for the viewing distance, but I can't imagine any smaller now. The 3D aspect of it is enhanced since we're able to see it at a larger scale as well. If the Mrs. is okay with you going for the 55", I'd say do it man.

Yeah, my wife doesn't care either way with which size that I go with. I am going to Best Buy tomorrow to get Gran Turismo 5, so I'll take a look at the 55" TV's again. LOL!

Oh, be forewarned though, just because it doesn't look "that big" in store... when sitting next to the other TV's of the same size, once you get it in your living room, they seem to grow by around 10", I really couldn't see too much of a size difference in store, but man, getting that behemoth home...

                Re: Plasma or LCD?

That is so true.......in store along their huge wall with the other tv's, they don't look all that big. But once you get that box in your car and then into your house, you would be like holy crap this thing grew in size on the ride home.

I literally could spend hours at Best Buy in their tv department alone. Then another hour or so in their movie aisles.

co-sign. If the budget and finance committee give you the go ahead, then go bigger. Trust me, your eyes will adjust. I thought 50" would be "too big" as a bedroom tv. Now, I can't imagine anything smaller.

Yeah, always get the biggest possible TV. I bought a 46" DLP a number of years ago sitting 8ft away in my old townhouse and although the size was fine, I wished I had gone for the 50". Now with the new house and being 14-15ft away from the TV, I'm definitely going 62" or 65" (depending on whether I go with Samsung or Panasonic). Being 14-15ft away from the 46" right now is making me squint at times....LOL.

                        Re: Plasma or LCD?

Thanks for all the advice and info in this thread.

I wound up going to P.C. Richard and picking up the Panasonic TCP50-G25.
He would have given me a '58 inch for practically the same price, but I measured everything out with the entertainment center and 50 was really the largest it could accommodate.

Anyway....it's a nice 1080p Plasma with the built in apps for Netflix and such(which is a homerun, since I wanted to hook a PC up to it anyway for Netflix...although I have conflicting info on whether the Netflix app made it in for the set. I haven't set it up yet obviously )

I got the monitor and a 2 year warranty for $799.(I get the warranty, since basically it's a third of the price for us and this particular P.C. Richards always takes out things back for repair pretty much no questions asked. We buy a LOT of things from this place....and they are very good to us....so it's kind of a courtesy)
                        Pretty good deal IMO.

                          Re: Plasma or LCD?

                          Very nice brother.

I had to scoot the surround cabinets to the entertainment stand out 3" on each side to accomodate the larger tv, but it's worth it... Looking at it in the store, and not measure, I figured the cabinets would be able to sit flush with the "base" cabinet, but that's not the case. There's 3" space between the center of the entertainment stand, and the two side towers... but it doesn't look bad at all.

I definitely would have made some adjustments to accommodate, but the G.C. wouldn't allow it. She's a tough cookie!

By the way...haven't seen you much in our respective areas of the boards, but I hope all is well on the job. You've already got some time in now. Still the junior man in your barracks?(your state, right?)

Knight make sure you keep the CONTRAST Level below 1/2 for the 1st 100 or so hours. This will help with any Burn-In & Image Retention you may get. Congrats on the new TV & enjoy my friend
