Are these expensive, typically? I'm looking at spending somewhere between $800-$1000 on the tv. Would these curtains blow my budget? And are they tacky for a living room?

Walmart sells some curtains for $20 or $30. IKEA also if you have one in your area. Price range goes all over the place really

Ok, looking for some help here. I will be purchasing a 50ish inch tv sometime in the next few months to replace a Samsung I bought in 2007 that was, at the time, "top-of-the-line" as far as models go (still brings a tear when I think about what I paid for it).

Anyway, long story short, I have three LCD tv's and I would really like to get a plasma this time, for the speed of the screen. I play alot of videogames and watch alot of Blu-Rays. However, I know plasmas don't do great with glare. My dilemna is, my condo faces west so I basically get sun coming in from about 2 or 3 in the afternoon until whenever it sets. I have blinds that mitigate the effect but obviously don't eliminate it.

Would I be foolish in getting a plasma despite this? It'd be a waste of money if I couldn't enjoy it at crucial times of the day (sun doesn't go down until 8 or 9 in the summer). I've never had a plasma so I'm wondering if the glare is as bad as people make it seem?

Most TV's now a days will have glare. What you want to look for is a TV with a good glare coating. Matte screens are far & between now a days.

Samsung Plasma's offer really good glare coating. It won't stop the glare totally, but it will allow for a good picture during the day

When the tv is on, its not much of an issue. while obviously not as bright as a lcd, they are fine in the daytime as well. some people have a problem with the glare/"reflective"ness of the screen. It's basically a mirror when the tv is off.

I appreciate the help, guys. I'm gonna look into the curtains and luckily the plasma screen I'm looking at getting happens to be a Samsung so that will cover both ends.

The glare when its off will make no difference to me, tbh. So I think I can deal with a slightly darker screen for the 600hz compared to 120hz or 240hz (which are becoming tougher to find at a. Reasonable price).

I just wanted to clarify that the Hz count on plasma screens versus LCD screens are two completely different measures. My post here might help explain that:

Just when you think you know some things :P and I've had a subscription to Home Theatre magazine for two years!!

You did say in that thread that, in your opinion, plasma is still the better choice for video games and sports...do you still feel that way?

Picked up a 51" Samsung 1080p Plasma at Best Buy for $800 after warranty. Couldn't be happier with my purchase. Really the only negatives i've read are that some units die within a few months, but for the price, and the fact that it's covered for two years on warranty (warranty is also renewable), it was worth it.

Picked up a 51" Samsung 1080p Plasma at Best Buy for $800 after warranty. Couldn't be happier with my purchase. Pretty sure you picked up the exact tv I've had my eye on the last few weeks. $899 up here. Seems like a good deal.

So Amazon came today to pick up my defective 65VT30 and the new one the brought is perfect except it buzzes like there is no tomorrow. WTFFFFFF

So I checked for defects and no dead or stuck pixels and it is perfect except the fan blowing faster then the fan on the other side of the tv

I just got off the phone with Panny and they will come Friday to fix the issue

So I just got a huge bonus from work the other day (woohoo!) and decided to spend some of it in a disgusting act of consumerism My in-laws bought us a Sony LED tv for Christmas (like 40" or so) for the upstairs, but I decided I wanted to finally replace my tube tv in my man cave.

My wife and I headed to Best Buy even as I was still torn on what I wanted to get. After looking at the 47", 50", 55" models, I was almost ready to buy an LG LCD 55". However, I saw a Sharp 60" LED TV right next to it for a couple hundred more.

I probably would have preferred a plasma, but because of lighting conditions is was pretty much not an option for us. So I finally settled on the 60" Sharp. Couple of items of note:

1) this thing is HUGE. It barely fit in the back of our crossover SUV I'm almost embarrassed at how big it is (that's what she said) because I'm not really a "keep up with the jones'" type of person...I mean I had an old tube Tv until 48 hours ago, so I think that says it all...
2) the picture is brilliant. We watched a DVD that afternoon, and it was amazing.
3) I was experiencing a little buyers remorse that night as I loaded up NHL 10 to give a ride, but the picture wasn't that impressive other than being big. It wasn't until last night that my dumb *** realized I still had it set for the old tube TV. After a quick adjustment on my 360 for widescreen 1080p (was at 480), I got an eye boner. I played a round of Battlefield 3 and couldn't believe at how great it looked.

Now I'm sitting here at work counting down the minutes to get home and play some more games on this thing. Hopefully my wife doesn't want to watch a movie tonight!

I recommend buy Disney WOW blu-ray and using it to tweak the Contrast, Brightness, Sharpness, Color and Tint of the set. It will make a world of difference in the picture quality if they are set correctly.

Also, I recommend using movie mode as the picture mode and dot by dot for the view mode. If there is a film mode, make sure that it is off as well.

As for the size, I have the 70" Sharp 3D TV and I am already use to the size. I think I could have stuck with the 80".
