I've been playing 2k (ps3) on an old tube TV for years...but today as an experiment I decided to try my PS3 on our LCD TV in the living room...I wanted to see if there was a noticeable difference in how the game felt, because I have read that LCD TV's have a delayed response time with controls on video games....and I did notice a pretty bad lag/delay to the controls compared to my trusty old tube TV. I have read that this has to do with the refresh rate (60 hz vs 120 hz, etc.) I believe our TV is 60 hz, and the delay was pretty noticeable. I have been wanting to get a new TV to play games on, but this delayed control is making me think twice. I have read that plasmas have almost no delay, but the smallest you can get a plasma is 40 inches. I have also read that some LCD TV's come with a "game mode" which is supposed to fix the dealy, but i'm skeptical that this game mode would actually help.

The delay was especially noticeable on defense...the control was so sloppy. I'm wondering if a lot of people who struggle with games are struggling due to the crappy control caused by their TV. I can't imagine trying to play a game online with even more delay added.

What TV's do you all use? Does game mode actually help response time? Does plasma really have better response time for games? Sorry, I'm a little behind on TV's, as I've put off replacing my old tube TV for so long. Another note, when I hooked my PS3 up to the LCD, I used the old S Video cable (the one with the red, white, and yellow plugs) - does this affect response time? would an HDMI cable have made a difference, or would that just result in a clearer picture?

I was surprised how noticeble the control delay was, and I'm wondering if a buch of people out there are playing with delayed, crappy control and they don't even realize it. I also wonder if game developers are dumding down their games and changing the animations in order to compensate for delayed response time on LCD TV's. It seems ridiculous to me that in 2012 they still have't figured out how to make a cheap TV with good response time.

Yes this is called input lag.....All hdtv flat panels suffer from it but some are much better then others.

Game Mode will make a difference but on some tv's the game mode only barely makes a difference but most they do make a big difference

The Game Mode turns off all processing that the tv does to make the picture quality look that good. Samsungs are notorious for having the worst input lag of all brands.

Game Mode does help a lot in Samsungs. Old Tube tv's are the best for lag free experience but its not HD and what is the point of a ps3 and 360 if you only getting half the enjoyment without the beauty of the game

Plasmas are much better then LCD's in terms of input lag

It is true that Plasmas do not come in lower then 40 inches but they cost less then led/lcd at this point in time.

If you want something small then I highly recommend an led monitor they are virtually lag free and are in HD

I have a PS3 and I play games on a Sony Bravia. Are there any known problems with this type of TV? I haven't noticed anything. I have not played a tube TV in years.

so I have finally decided to get a new tv, upgrading from the old tube tv I got in 1995. I need some help though, the decisions as to what brand and type are a little overwhelming for somebody like myself who knows next to nothing about tvs.

I'm primarily going to use the tv for games and to watch sports, but also occasionally to watch a blu-ray. I was told not to look at plasma because it's bad for video games and sports, and it was suggested I check out either LCD or LED. But now I'm on the Best Buy website and the comparison says plasmas are good for sports and video games and have anti-burn technology. So I don't really know what I should be looking for, and any help is appreciated.

I'd like it to be modest size, probably no bigger than 40 inches and likely closer to 32 inches.

i always thought plasmas were best for sports and games because they have faster response time and are good for things with fast motion...with games, you are supposed to have more responsive control on plasmas...i can't confirm this for sure, since i have never used a plasma, but that's what "they say." i don't know who told you led or lcd is better...i thought the opposite was true.

Yea I just transitioned from LCD to Plasma...I'd pick plasma over LCD with two similar TV's.

The old school problems of plasmas are virtually nonexistent.

Whoever informed you of that is totally wrong. I don't know about LEDs, but LCD in the past had a history with ghosting when there is fast moving action. I think that problem has been solved if you get a TV that is at least 120Hz.

Biggest question is what is your budget and where are you putting it? I know you are old school and don't want a 55", but dang 32" is really small. Since you don't want all the bells and whistles, post your budget and it should be pretty easy to find you one.

Well I say 32-36'' because it's for my bedroom and I'm going to be fairly close to it when I use it. The TV I have right now is 27'' and size-wise it's worked out well for me.

As for budget, I'd like to keep it under $400 if possible.

hhgregg is a great place to look for TV's. Also you don't need 1080p if it's a 32 inch screen. 720p is just fine

I wanted to avoid HH Gregg, a friend bought a TV there and had a horrendous experience. Don't want to go into details now, but I refuse to buy anything there because of it.

I ended up getting a 32'' LG LCD. It's 1080p, 60hz, got multiple HDMIs. The guy in the store said even though it's only 60 hz the ghosting shouldn't be there anymore, that it was only for older models. From what I could tell in the store, he was right.
