Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

I already have an LG TV (gaming) that I love but I'm looking for a TV for my wife to watch her shows and what not... She really doesn't care what kind of TV it is... I just noticed a Vizio the other day and like it.

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

Trying to find a good tv for my mom. It will be primarily for sports. I want to say she should get a plasma. She won't pay a thousand... so I need to find something less. I have a couple picked out but feel free to make any other suggestions.

There are several 50" 1080p plasmas from Samsung and Panasonic $800 and under on Amazon.

You may want to consider a LED though. You have to be delicate with plasmas the first 100 hours or so. A LED (LCD) would be worry free from day 1.

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

Ah, I explain that common misconception in this thread.

So, as far as refresh rate goes, you're still looking at 60 Hz for plasma screens. The 120 Hz and 600 Hz technologies are actually not a comparison, but instead are two completely different measures. Plasma still runs at 60 frames per second, so the 600 Hz is completely irrelevant to motion resolution. The "600" value is a product of its refresh rate and its number of subfields (10), all which produce that same frame ten times (once per subfield) with varying intensity to produce color gradations. The 120/240 Hz features on LCD's is specifically tied into refresh rate, and is an artificial interpolation at that. The higher refresh rate will absolutely make a difference in gaming. Especially in meter based stuff like pitching in The Show or reloading a weapon in shooters. I also noticed a difference in Rock Band and had to recalibrate.

My old TV was 120hz and my new one is 600hz and it is like night and day.

 That said, I still prefer plasma's inherent technology, as they do indeed seem to produce substantially less input lag, especially for gaming.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

Best Buy has a 60" plasma for $1099+ tax

Not sure what price Amazon has (with free shipping and no taxes)

EDIT: The Panasonic VT50 plasma won the 2012 HDTV shootout. The pick the "Top 3" plasmas and LCDs and have calibrators come in to get each looking as close to perfect as possible.

The second place set was a Elite Pro LED that's only $2000-2,500 more expensive than the VT.

Interesting enough, a local dimming LED came in first in black level performance.

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

Personally, plasma (though at 60 Hz) just looks more natural. There is zero motion blur, and every frame is captured beautifully. An LCD at 120/240 Hz kind of looks cool in its own right, but only if you like the look. If you want it to look a little more like it would look "in real life," I would go with plasma.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

That's a lot of glasses. Edit: The glasses are sold out. You'll have to call Amazon and get a $30 credit for the glasses to purchase when they come back in stock.
