Question for Scott or possibly anyone with knowledge. I have an LG CX 65" TV I bought back in March. I've been attempting to play games in Dolby Vision on my Xbox Series X at 60 hz. Xbox settings show my tv is enabled for Dolby vision at 60 Hz however all the games are showing up as HDR.

I've turned off Freesync on my LG as I've read having it on will disable DV. I have tried different games that I've read are compatible with DV but just get the HDR message.

I am guessing my TV is a 2020 model and it has not yet received the update from LG for Dolby Vision gaming at 120 HZ. But I'm thinking that update would not be necessary to play games in DV at 60 HZ, especially since my Xbox says my tv is set up for gaming in DV at 60 HZ.

Pretty much at a loss here.

Dolby Vision is in beta for the Xbox Series X still I believe. You have to be in their insider program to actually use it and you have to be in it for a month as well.

Honestly, DV with games now isn't all that better than HDR. The system is just converting the HDR signal to DV. The games aren't optimized for it yet. I think one of the first is gonna be the new Halo.

I watched a comparison video of the same game being played on a series x on a C1 in DV and HDR side by side, and there is almost no difference.

Probably not even worth stressing about at this point until devs start mastering the games in DV.

I watch everything in DV on my CX and Its breathtaking. Trust me you will have no issues.

The color range is actually better since it can hit absolute black levels and LEDs can’t. OLEDs are plenty bright.

Well I can say after about 8 seconds, this is the most amazing TV I've ever seen in person. I do however notice colors seem to be more saturated, which I'm not sure if that's the nature of an OLED, or just my settings. I'm curious about that.

The HDR in Madden and The Show is just amazing. Brightness is not an issue at all.

For anyone with the C1, some tech guy said to play video games in PC mode and not game optimizer. Is this something I should be doing. Seems weird since this whole TV is billed as a gaming TV with the game optimizer mode.

Update: Was able to try Madden in DV and it looked terrible. Super dim. I've heard other say it's amazing. So I don't know if my settings are off, or if it's my TV.

DV is weird in Madden. It's definitely not as bright, but it looks great in night games. The more I played in the day it was a little better after a bit. Maybe it's just like that with the game. I didn't try anything else in DV.

Few games look good in Dolby Vision, most don't. Far as PC mode, don't use it for consoles, consoles can't output the color range to make PC mode look good. Also remember to recalibrate your PS5 and Xbox Series X HDR settings. I personally really only use Dolby Vision watching shows on Netflix that was made with Dolby Vision in mind.

Yeah, I think I'm just gonna turn DV off for games. HDR looks amazing on this TV.

I did do the calibrations on the systems.

I think the one thing I notice most compared to my old TV, is the colors seems more saturated. Which looks really good, but I'm not used to it quite yet. It was a little jarring at first. I'm using standard picture mode for just regular TV, and increased overall brightness. I haven't watched any movies yet, but I'm curious to see how Filmmaker mode is compared to cinema and home cinema. Gonna watch a 4K blu-ray tonight and see how it looks.

I played COD Cold War in 120fps a it was like a totally different games. I'm ok at the game, like a 1.8 k/d, but I was freaking deadly in 120fps. Felt like I was able to get the upper hand in a shot for shot against someone else close to me. I will happily take a hit in graphics and not having ray tracing to use 120fps. It's a huge difference. At least for me. I know some say they can't tell the difference between 60-120.

Thanks to me pointlessly wrecking my mostly fine secondary TV, I'll have to get a new one.

Any suggestions on mid to lower budget ones (under $500US)

Ones like TCL are much cheaper, but part of me still wants to opt for something like LG (despite having multiple LGTVs in the past that had issues the same several years into their respective lifespans). Best I found so far is a LG 55UN7000 one.

It's not a necessity to get right now, should I wait for Black Friday then? I'm mainly using it to watch sports on, no gaming. What should I be looking at spec wise? Last time I was shopping for a TV was over 10 years ago. All I cared back then was making sure it was LED.

Can someone explain to me what's the difference between Variable Refresh Rate and Smart Motion? They sound like they are the same. I'm still researching the purchase for a 4K TV for my PS5 and XBOX Series X.

My preferred size is 43" but might go as high as 50".

My main TV is apparently too old to even have made their list lol. Although the secondary TV that broke, it got a number in the 6s for its rating even though I thought it was great, so I guess it's a matter of opinion and what you're looking for.

Rtings is pretty well respected. They don't throw out many high scores. They test everything, and I mean everything about a TV. Check other reviews on that TV too and they are good.

I like Rtings because they aren't afraid to tell you the bad things. A lot of reviews will ignore them. It helps you make a more informed decision.
