    Re: Computer Processor running Hot

    Re: Computer Processor running Hot

Finally got around to installing the processor, and even running the stock heatsink/fan, and what a world of difference. Even putting in a new fan, and rearranging the wires. Right now, the hottest that it's gotten while playing 2k11 is 42. It runs idle at around 31-32 C, so I don't even think i'm going to go for a Watercooling system or aftermarket fan right now. If it will continue to stay this way, then I'm fine with it.

And, without overclocking, it's running at 3.43 Ghz per core right now for some reason, instead of the 3.2 that's advertised. Not sure what's going on with that, but I'll take it. Running cool and fast.. Very nice combination. Thus far, I am very happy for my total $115 processor after rebates, gift cards, and percentages off.

      Awesome!

Have you downloaded any mods for 2k11?

Oh yeah, I have basically any and every mod going

I'm trying to figure out which 2012 roster I want to use to start out with though.

I'm wondering now what was wrong with my other processor, because there is no way that with the same basic cooling system, that a x4 core processor should be idling at 45-47 C, and getting to 78C under load. That's terrible. I've let the x6 run and the hottest it's gotten thus far is 42.8C. That's after around 3 hours of running benchmarks and whatnot. There was either something wrong with the processor or the heatsink/fan.

Looking forward to throwing a different videocard in, and another 4GB stick of DDR 1600 ram, and rolling on.

Hard to say why that other processor was running so hot.

I overclocked my wimpy E8400 Core 2 duo 3.0 ghz to 3.6 ghz. Pretty easy overclock and temps haven't increased all that much.

            Re: Computer Processor running Hot

I'm thinking about overclocking, just for the heck of it. Although I'm really not sure why. (just to say I did it?)

With those speeds, I just don't forsee needing anything more processor wise. I know my GPU is what's holding me back right now, but for some reason, now that I have a nicer processor, feel like I need more power.

I'm still not sure why the other was so hot though. Very peculiar.

It has that turbo core boosting technology. When all 6 cores aren't being used by an app a few are de-activated and the rest get turbo charged (overclocked).

It may just be that it's an older processor design, or the processor is old (I have no knowledge on these things)?

For reference, I run an AMD Phenom II X4 940 or 945 Deneb 3.0ghz Black Edition.

This is my heatsink (not my PC as I have horrible cable management), and I idle around 35-42 depending on the temp of my apartment and hit at the highest 52 (OC'd to 3.3ghz).

                  Re: Computer Processor running Hot

Holy cow... that is a clean case. I definitely need to go through and make some changes to my current layout. Not cutting it.

My new processor is idling at 32-35 C, ran Prime 95 for around an hour yesterday doing the torture test, and the hottest it got was 55C on the stock heatsink. Granted, I haven't overclocked it yet and not sure if I'm going to or not. But looking at that case, looks like I need to do some heavy cable management.

                  What is that heatsink/fan?

Haha! Not sure what you are talking about. That is a pretty clean case. My PSU is not fully modular and it makes my case a little bit messy. My temps are too bad though, it idles around 39C, but under load, hits about 50C. Overclocked from 3.0 ghz to 3.6 ghz

Yeah, my PSU looks like an octopus with all the wires and cables flowing out of it. I'll get it cleaned up. He said that wasn't his case though, just the same Heatsink he has.

Yeah, those temps definitely aren't bad. My other processor was getting well above 60, hit 78 just playing around 6 minutes of 2k11. Definitely a problem.

It's a Scythe Mugen 2. There is a whole thread dedicated to them on overclock.net.

As would I man. As would I. I'm going to get it cleaned up though, as soon as I decide to order a new videocard. THinking about at 6870 or something along those lines. Just not sure what I want just yet, and what I can afford.

Graphics card will be the last piece of my build that I'll buy. I'm looking to pick it up around Rage in October to see what value I can get.

I'm interested in getting a modular power supply to cut down on the cables.

Yeah my computer is not nearly that well organized on the inside. May get a modular PSU next time cause that is quite impressive. (and im sure shaves off a few degrees with the easy airflow)
