    Re: Computer Processor running Hot

Looks much better than using my black electrical tape to group "alike" wires to help with the air flow too

I'm going to look into one of those now as a matter of fact. I'm thinking about picking up a 5770 on ebay right now for pretty cheap, and throwing whatever I get on top of it. I've never had dual video cards though, so not sure about it.

May be better of grabbing an nvidia card and group it with my GTx 260. Blah, too much to remember about computers.

Rage is the new FPS from iD Software. Game looks great, and I'm expecting AAA performance. It also kicks off the string of computer games I want with BF3 following later that month, and Skyrim the next month.

Oh, I thought it was a convention of sorts that you were talking about Man I need some rest.

I looked on newegg and didn't see anything really on sale. I see a lot of "MIR Rebates" but a lot of people say it's taking half a year for their rebates, if at all.

I think with what I'm playing right now, I'll hold off until October/November as well to get something that I know will play Skyrim at full blast. The GTX 260 will just have to do. Unless I find a great deal on CL or eBay/Newegg TigerDirect.

WTF, that really isn't a bad idea. Let some of those prices come down. I would shoot for at a minimum a GTX 570 or ATI equivalent. I made the move on the 560ti, but not sure it wouldn't have been wise to hold off for a few more months, but since the wife agreed to let me upgrade, i made the move.

Would this be a modular PSU? If so, $54.99 after MIR for 750W PSU, wow. Very nice.

Not modular, just read the reviews. Still a good deal for 750W PSU.

Here is an example of one that is modular, but read carefully, some of them are not fully modular so you will end up with a big rat's nest anyways. Meaning, they have a bunch of core cables that you cannot remove from the power supply and then you have a few optional cables that you can connect to the modular portion. I bought a "semi" modular power supply. A fully modular one will be expensive.

Might have to go with that PSU, but I would've preferred at least 750W.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a XFX ATI HD6950 for less than $180. Should be good enough for what I want, and if nothing else, I can grab something down the road for some Crossfire action, right? Anyone have the 6950? Good/Bad? I could get a 6850 for $115, or 6950 for $175. Looking at the reviews, it looks like the 6950 is by far the better card.

AND... I went for the HD 6950 1GB card. Looks like I can flash it into a 6970, which is an added bonus. Now, after I sell my GTX 260 for $65-70, then I'll have only paid $110 out of pocket, which is not bad overall considering.

Shows hierarchy chart. 6950 and 6850 are within 3 trees

I don’t recommend upgrading your graphics card unless the replacement card is at least three tiers higher. Otherwise, the upgrade is somewhat parallel and you may not notice a worthwhile difference in performance.
Benchmarks > Reviews imo. Look at benchmarks for your cards and see how they compare across the board.

But I'm upgrading from a GTX 260, so I'm definitely above the 3 tiers. Are you suggesting that the 6950 isn't that much of an upgrade on the 6850?

Or am I misreading? Regardless, pretty happy with my total price, since you can't really find one new for around that price.

Looks like it does a little better than the GTX 560 Ti

                          Not bad for the price.

I haven't looked up cards in awhile but last time I did, the improvements weren't very drastic when looking at cards when close to the tier list. With a blind guess, the 2 cards you're looking at won't see a monumental different in frames. That's why I liked benchmarks where they put everything up against each other to see how much of a difference it is and figure out the cost for frames.

                              Re: Computer Processor running Hot

Yeah, I think the card I bought only got around 10FPS over the cheaper one, but then again the card that I bought can be BIOS flashed to a 6970 in less than a minute (I confirmed the version with the buyer), so all in all, I'll take it in a heartbeat. Looking at the benchmark with the 6970, pretty impressive overall.

As is, other than tessellation the 6950 runs pretty well with the 560 ti, beating it in some benchmarks, losing in the other.

6950 runs a lot cooler too, so anything that will keep heat out of my case is a welcome addition. Looking forward to it, should be here by Thursday, and I have an early Dr's appt Friday, so I get Friday-Sunday of playing around with it.

                                Re: Computer Processor running Hot

So my final system specs are as follows (for the time being)

                                AMD x6 1090T 3.2GHz
                                XFX ATI HD6950 1GB DDR5 (Flash to 6970)
                                8GB Corsair 1600Mhz Memory
                                1TB WD 6.0GB/S HD
                                Liteon BD-R/RW Bluray burner
                                750W Power Supply
                                Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Right now, I've spent right at $465 on the system, so wheeling and dealing, I think I've done pretty well.

The only thing I'm thinking about right now, is maybe grabbing another videocard closer to Skyrim & BF3, to run in Crossfire/SLI mode, and possibly a watercooling system or a Modular Power Supply.

Overall, pretty happy with my setup.
