Re: Netflix hikes prices for DVDs + streaming

I just canceled my membership. A 60% price increase is baloney. I have a Redbox right up the road from where I live. I will be using it from now on.

We canceled ours last month and this increase in price just tells me again it was a good move. Having to pay that much is terrible. Their streaming selection wasn't very good and that's what we used.

Redbox all the way now. Netflix is making a terrible mistake with this.

IDK, with the release of G+, nobody can be sure that FB is gonna stay on top. Google should buy Netflix since they are becoming Skynet anyway. They should start putting anything digital under their umbrella.

because they are incredibly cheap and convenient. That's how they beat blockbuster with mailing dvd's, and it's how they've grown the best streaming service to date. New PPV movies are like $7 each, which gets you a whole month of unlimited streaming on netflix.

There's only so much Netflix can do if the studios are so interested in jacking up the price and dead set on fragmenting the market with strong competitors. Plus they've got ISP's capping usage, which will only keep people from using it as a replacement to cable. It'll be interesting to see how they adapt in the next few years.

Bingo - this would just be another step in Google's plan to take over the world.

I switched to streaming only 8 months ago. No reason to mail DVDs back and forth when I can drive 3 blocks either direction to a redbox. It's a great combination.

Re: Netflix hikes prices for DVDs + streaming

I just switched my plan from "Streaming plus one" ($9.99) to "streaming only" ($7.99).

I think when I joined that was your lowest option ($9.99)

I only rented one DVD, and never returned it. They said return it within 14 days or pay $14.(would have been $20 for blu-ray)

Yes, especially with a lot more competition. Netflix no longer has the leverage.

Does Hulu Plus offer the same selection as far as TV series, etc, as Netflix? If so, I'd rather pay the $7.99/month for that, and just start using Redbox for my movie rentals.

I'm ticked about this whole thing but I'm not cancelling just yet. If it hits 20.00 I'll probably jump ship though. If I'm paying 20.00 a month I want ESPN back, you can shove your Cheers episodes.

No. Hulu has a library of old shows, but it doesn't necessarily match what Netflix offers. I believe Hulu might offer some series that Netflix does not and vice versa.

What Hulu does better than Netflix is stream episodes of shows in their current seasons after the episode has aired. Netflix can only show you older seasons of a current show.

edit: I forgot that there may be a handful that do air after they've been shown, but it is extremely limited. The only series I've noticed that pops up on Netflix after an episode has aired is SNL, but that's because of the contract SNL and NBC have with Netflix - they can stream nearly every old episode of SNL from the beginning of the show.

I read that went away with the new agreement, YP. Sucks that was one of my favoite features on Netflix.

Netflix is not going anywhere anytime soon. I argue they are in perfect position and exactly where they want to be. People can argue that they are hampered by the studios but everyone faces the same challenges.

i've already made my adjustments, only stream video. if i want a dvd that bad i'd rather pay the extra $9 a month to own it. i'll get a dvd if i know for sure ill like it (at least alil bit)...
I am glad I got the Buell- I love riding it, I love the oddball looks I get on the road- I love people asking "What IS that thing?" I love flying into a corner WAY too hot, scared spitless and sure I'll never hold it at this speed- and hearing the bike whisper "Sissy!"...
