Yes it is. I got one for my wife and she loves it. She uses it to surf and to use facebook as well as listen to music. She also plays angry birds. Your wife sounds like she's in the same boat and I think she'll love it. It's definitely a great device.

I got one last week and I'm enjoying it a great deal. I miss some of the regular Kindle features (page numbers and popular highlights in books) but otherwise it's been awesome. I still don't know how to utilize some of the apps I've downloaded like Dropbox or ES File Reader (?), but I'll figure things out eventually.

I do have a question about the battery though. Should I drain it all the way until it shuts off, or charge it at a certain point?

I believe I read that letting it drain until it completely shuts off often will shorten its life span. I would charge it when the battery gets low and before it shuts off.

Wife was wanting a reader, I'm wondering if I should just get her the Fire?

This is pretty much in line with what my wife does as well, and she loves her Fire. I reccomend it over a netbook, if that's what she's going to use it for. More compact, better battery life, etc.

I was skeptical about the Fire, but it's impressed me as a quality tablet.

I'm tempted to pull the trigger on one of these, but I want to see what the iPad 3 offers in a couple weeks. For guys that own this as well as other Apple devices, do you find it a little frustrating being in two different ecosystems? This why I'm a little apprehensive about making the jump. I guess I could upload my iTunes library to the Amazon cloud, but still.

I dont really use her Fire, but yes when I have used it, it's a little frustrating go back and forth.

Still, its a solid device that offers a lot of bang for the buck.

I'd say yes. Since I got my girlfriend her's for her birthday, I pretty much have all the free video game/TV time that I want because she spends all of her time on her Fire playing Words with Friends, on Pintrest, etc. The downside is that my dish-washing duties have increased for the same reason

I've been wondering if I should scoop this one up soon. When is an "updated" Fire suppose to come out? I was going to try and get an iPad but I like the idea of having those free books on the Fire, Amazon's movies (since I'm a Prime member), and Netflix. It's not that great of a screen is it? I'm definitely torn if I should get this now, wait for the next one, or get an iPad.......

Mid-year they're going to release a 9" screen version apparently. I gave my wife the Kindle Fire today, and she loves it. Hasn't gotten off of it since. She's on Pinterest, cookbooks, magazines... loves it.

                        Very cool little device.

The screen is actually very vibrant. I like it for a 7" screen.

yeah, but I wouldn't buy a bigger screen Kindle Fire. Amazon has this thing too locked down.

Just got this beast. Love it.

Question, though... I know it's probably a dumb one, but I need some earphones for this thing. What are my best options? I'd rather not fork out a lot of money...

                              Thanks.
