Makeshift home theaters suck, but you have to live with them. I had so many bedroom configurations (from my downstairs guest room, to four different dorm room setups, to my current bedroom setup), and I'm not satisfied with any of them until I have the space and move out.

I guess just make do with what you can and test them all out. You basically can't argue with your environment, so you'll take what you can get if that makes sense. No room for "I wish I had such and such." I'm sure you'll be pleased that you have the system in general.

Yeah they do suck. This one especially since there's 2 doors limiting my options. I'll just try mounting it up near the ceiling and see how it sounds.

        Just got these this week:

Sound is fantastic. First pair I had, however, none of the controls on the right side headset worked. Second pair work like a charm. Played some Farcry 3 on my PC, and some NBA 2K13 on the 360. MLB on PS3 really showed off the surround, though.

Any car audio people here? I have about $500 I want to spend on a new stereo and 4 new speakers + installation. I have a 2008 Chevy Silverado ext cab. The pain and cost to put a sub in this truck and still retain my back seats isn't worth the pain. So I think I am going to go all out to get the most power out of the normal speakers.

How in love are you with that HTIB? The 7.1 HTIB (with active subwoofer and Audyssey--auto room calibration) is only $6 more than what you paid for the 5.1 if you got it from Amazon. $254 shipped vs. $248

            http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S5500.../ref=de_a_smtd

            <img src=http://www.intl.onkyo.com/products/system_components/home_theater/ht-s5500/i_main.jpg>

Great deal even if you're just going to go 5.1 instead of 7.1

Dang I wish that would've went to that price a week ago. I've already opened the 5.1 and gone through it so I don't think it's worth the hassle of packaging it back together and sending it back. Plus I got the 5.1 for $235 so it'd actually be $19 more. Oh well, while the active subwoofer and audio calibration would be nice, I won't have any use for the 7.1 until at least 2 or 3 years from now.

That brings up another question I had, how hard would it be to upgrade the one I have to a 7.1 system? Couldn't I just buy an active subwoofer, two more speakers, and then hook it all up to a 7.1 receiver?

You'd be starting over since the only parts than can be used are the 5 speakers:
                New 7.1 Receiver (At least $250) A 5.1 receiver can't do 7.1 --doesn't have the speaker inputs
New Active 8" sub (At least $100)
2 more speakers (At least $50)

basically buying a new 7.1 HTIB

You'd be getting a whole lot more than the actual $19 difference. (Based on Amazon's pricing the 5500 was a $649 system... while the 3500 was a $400 system)

                --Better receiver
                --Better sub
                --Auto room calibration
--2 additional speakers (to go 7.1 in the future)

EDIT: The 7.1 HTIB is down to $241. So the difference is $6

Yeah I guess I probably should've exchanged it. I have everything set up now though so I don't really want to deal with the hassle of packaging it back up.

All I can say is Pioneer is fantastic. I've used their 5.1 systems, but not 7.1.

They truly are "elite" class when it comes to receivers though.

At that price point, can't go wrong with Pioneer Elite. Denon would also be a solid choice.

Its kinda hard to say who makes the best receiver imo. I've heard a lot of the major companies: pioneer, onkyo, denon and yamaha and I don't think you can go wrong choosing one of those.

Basically. Once you get in that $500 and up category...you're now just looking at personal preference.

Pioneer, Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, etc

Of that group Onkyo AVRs are more likely to run warm and need to be properly ventilated.
