I got most of my parts today, pretty impressed since I ordered it yesterday morning. I actually ordered a wrong part (12-1 card reader) but decided I didn't want it anymore and I ordered a wrong wireless adapter so that stuff is going back.

I found a real good tutorial youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?nomobile=1&v=BCjxMG4OLdE

Put this beast together back in March. Dropped nearly 3k on it, something I haven't done in 15 years. Usually spend around 1k for a new PC, but wanted to go all out this go around. Used one of only a few motherboards that supported 64 GBs of RAM.

Possibly, probably not. If it's compatible with your service you could use it, but you can't AFAIK use the router functions without the modem function.

          http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833166064

          DDRWT capable router

          USB WiFi adapter

          Connected for less than $30.

Only cheaper option I can think of is buying a couple bluetooth adapters and trying to bridge those between PCs, and it would work but the PC by the modem would have to always be on and I've found these types of connections to be unstable at best.

Thanks man... I'll probably snag a usb adapter like you posted.

Can't believe im finally taking the PC plunge but the time is about right.

Don't plan on playing as many games as you guys do but for now 2k will be just fine.. later on I'll upgrade as needed

the 7950 and not the 7970?
                any reason behind that ?
either way that is a beast of a rig.

Here's my probably 2ish year old (or older) desktop main points:

                  Intel core i7-860
                  8GB DDR Memory
                  ATI Radeon HD 5770

Not necessarily looking to upgrade, but while I can play all the games I want it's sometimes at the low settings. Just wondering if a fairly cheap upgrade (probably to video card, doubt I'd want to do processor) would improve things enough to be worth it...

Thanks for the input! I've been out of the component game for a while....

Only thing I can think of is that the other wasn't out at that time. I know they hadn't released the Ivy bridge at that time, it was released literally a couple of weeks after I had purchased the processor. So no matter what we buy, we're never at the top for long.

Hard part was getting the PCI SSD to boot up. Folks don't realize how much faster the PCI Bus is than SATA. It's TB throughput vs GB throughput, not that the SSD can push TB's, but it can fill the SATA line easily as it's running a RAID onboard.

Thing takes longer to recognize the hardware before starting up than it does to boot, which is under 7 seconds. If it's asleep. It starts up instantly (under 1 second at least). Crazy fast. Plan on installing VMWare on it so I can play around with Chef/Puppet for fun.

yeah video card would be a good start, but make sure your power supply can handle it.

What would be a big enough jump in quality to be worth it? Trying to figure out what level card and what it could cost me...

All the card names/numbers get confusing...and I'm probably not willing to spend oodles of money on the latest card....

Would a card update enable me to play something like Far Cry 3?

without knowing everything about your pc, I would guess a 7850, they run about $180, should play Far Cry 3 on high, once again this is me guessing.

Wait a minute.......did you say DDR ????? That memory is too damn slow and will bottle neck any modern day graphics card. Your CPU will bottleneck a modern day graphics card as well, they both too slow. You need a whole new PC.

Im sure if hes using a i7-860 chances are hes already using ddr3 ram.
just a guess again. although you do bring up a good point about the CPU it is a bit slow....

                                Sorry, DDR3 yeah....

Gotcha though...I knew it was a bit older, and don't really want to get a new one right now and the card would help but not be that much different.
