Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread
Ok, I need your expert opinions please.
My Dell Pavilion is getting a little long in the tooth and I currently have a Radeon 4850 card. I'm looking to buy a new computer off of Craigslist and would appreciate some input. I've been comparing cpu's on Tom's Hardware till my eyes have bugged out. I've narrowed it down between these 2.
I don't need a monitor so the 2nd guy will sell it to me for $200 without an OS which I can install. I'm leaning towards that right now but will change course if someone can convince me otherwise.
I game a little BF3, NBA 2k12, etc...and do quite a bit of Photoshop work. I would really like this to last me the next 5 or so years, or possibly be easily upgradeable. If I do get the 2nd, I would most likely get a Radeon 6850.
Thank you for your opinion!

That first one doesn't seem like a deal for a used computer, overpriced.
Judging from the reviews of the CPU and the GPU in the second one it looks like he built it in 2009 at some point. I guess for $200 though it's better then anything else you can probably get.Last edited by SuperBowlNachos; 12-05-2012, 11:17 PM.Comment

I have been out of the PC game for about 5 years so any helpful advice or programs I should run? I am gradually learning since I am listening to PC Perspective podcast. I found about Prime95 the other day so that should give you a sense of what I don't know. I am going to have some reading to do...My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment

The 1st one is the better deal. AMD A-10 chips just came out in October or November and they kick I-5 and I-7 *** with the APU those chips have. It is all about chip architecture and currently the A series AMD chips have a better one then anything Intel currently has out.Comment

Anyway, the reason the i5 system worries me, I see a 3 year old system with a god-only-knows how old SSD (SSD's have a short lifespan anyway, especially older models), case looks cheap which makes me worry about that PSU, the case is cramped and looks like it has meager airflow. I'd worry that parts are soon to fail (especially fans, PSU), and adding a new video card might prove to be a tight fit both physically and thermally.Comment

Yeah, no. That 3 year old i5 is faster than the A10, not by leaps and bounds, but it's faster. Only way the A10 beats Intel is if you try to game on the embedded GPU, and even then that 7660D is going to struggle. The 3 year old GTS250 in the other system is faster than the 7660D.
