I'd look up and see if it comes with thermal paste. If not you'll need a tube.

Not sure if you'll have a use for this, but something you may not have thought of that is convenient for me at least - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820223103

I'll make sure I check that, I just use USB slots really only ring I connect is my iPod and USB flash drives. Speaking of which I don't need anything special to set up those right? They just connect when I install motherboard?

So, other than the obvious, do I need to purchase separate things for say, modem? sound card? USB? Is a fan necessary?

EDIT: I see that the motherboards have the ports, well some of them. As for the case, how difficult is it to pick a case? Would the ports I need be easily accessible like in ready-made PCs?

            Oh lordy

The motherboard will have your Ethernet plugin, a sound port and USB ports. Plus there are connections on the motherboard to hook up the USB ports that will be on the case. The case should come with all of the necessary fans. Then there are usually spots where you can add more.

This is the case someone else in this thread is getting and he convinced me to get it too - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119233

Here are some cheaper ones too - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...NG&Pagesize=20
I'd stick to ones that have a 5 egg rating. I am a nerd, I like ones that have a window and lights in them lol

Its a lot less scary than you're probably imagining it to be. Or at least it was for me.
Can you post specs, impressions, ect? Me and you are going for pretty much the same build.

CJ, did you really ask if a fan is necessary? lol

                    CPU: Intel i5 Quad-Core 2500K @ 3.3 GHz

                    GPU: ZOTAC GeForce GTX 560

                    Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-VLX

RAM: 8 GB Ballistix by Crucial

                    PSU: Coolmaster GX 650W

                    HDD: Seagate 1 TB Barracuda

DVD: Just a standard RW DVD drive

So far this baby runs great. Runs Battlefield 3 at max settings without a hitch. Won't be running Max Payne 3 or anything, but it works for what I need it to right now.

I love that my 4 year old 8800GT is still popping up on some minimum requirements. I hope the 560 does us well for the next 2-3 years.

If I followed the green/orange path outlined on this page, would I be in good shape? My computer just crapped the bed, so i'm looking to replace. I'm gonna salvage my GT240 video card and hopefully the hard drive, so that should bump the cost down quite a bit.

What do you guys think of the builds on that site?

If anyone here has a Micro Center store near them, they will build computers for you if you're not comfortable doing it. I know that I don't want to spend $800 doing it when I've never done it before so I'm buying the parts and having them put it together. I'm sure there are other stores that will do something like that but the only one I know of where I am is Micro Center.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

How much does that service cost?

What I'm getting costs $89. They have different levels where they just put certain components in all the way to putting everything in and installing all the software so it's like buying a pre-built one from Dell or HP. I'm just having them put the stuff together and installing everything myself.

That isn't that bad of pricing. If Best Buy actually did that service it would be like $200 or something ridiculous like that.
