Re: Official "I want to build a New PC!" Thread

Finally upgraded my GeForce GTX 460SE to a Palit GeForce Jetstream GTX 970. Quite happy with it, and I ran the Tomb Raider benchmark just to see if I can finally get that damned TressFX to run and show Lara the way she was meant to be played -- with damned fine hair!

It went well. Currently downloading Dragon Age: Inquisition, and I feel well prepared for The Witcher 3 and MGSV if I decide to ditch the PS4 version.

Nice, I'm trying to hold off on getting one, you're not helping. What was your framerate in the benchmark with TressFx? Also, what CPU do you have?

I have a Sandy Bridge i5-2500 @ 3.30 GHz. Average framerate with TressFX was around 58 fps.

If you got the money to spare, there's really no point in holding off unless you're just really waiting for a good deal. The truly next-gen games are about to come out, might as well enjoy the holidays with great looking company.

I want to wait to see what AMD drops next, expecting an announcement hopefully by the end of January. My 7950 is far from obsolete, but I want to upgrade around the time Witcher 3 drops.

This new nugget helps me be a little more patient:

Some of you may be familiar with the Chiphell forums. Often, users there will post benchmarks of unreleased products, and surprisingly enough, they often manage to be curiously accurate. Now, user Junmiu posted some performance information of a "Captain Jack" graphics card, and while we have no idea what card that is, we can guess.

The rumor is that "Captain Jack" is either the R9 380X or the R9 390X, although for all intents and purposes, it doesn't matter. One thing is certain – this card is from AMD. The "Captain Jack" codename falls (sort of) right in line with past names from the company, which include Hawaii, Tahiti, and even Vesuvius.

When we reached out to AMD, a company representative told us that he has never heard of "Captain Jack" in this context. While this means that it's possible that the codename isn't accurate, the representative did not say anything about the performance numbers, so there may be a hint of truth to this.

The listed performance sits at 65.6 FPS, which is an average performance number of a handful of games. All were run at a 2560 x 1440 resolution. This is notably faster than a GTX 980, which scored 56.6 FPS across the selection of games. Captain Jack still used a little more power than its green competitor, consuming 197 W vs the GTX 980's 185, but at that number it's actually still more efficient.
This is, of course, just a rumor, and AMD denied that Captain Jack exists, so we're taking all of this with a grain of salt.

What if I don't buy a GPU right away? Is that a bad thing? If I'm not doing any hardcore gaming? I mean I can run games on my macbook using intel integrated 320M so I'm guessing the Intel 4600 on the 4690K would be a slight improvement on that right?

Because right now with my budget and some of the Sales going on I can get a decent headstart on a build and save some money.I'm planning on having more Money coming in towards christmas day anyways this is just with what I can buy with my saved budget now.

                There's no turning back now.

PS - And yes I don't have the GPU yet.

Might as well just build the PC, put it in a box until you get the GPU. Once GPU comes in, put PC outside of box, pop GPU in, and have a happy christmas!

                    My thoughts too!

Now if I could just keep it in the box...

Bought a 4 gig External HDD for the Xbox One, now need one for computer that uses the USB as a power supply. Any suggestions?

Bought one of these for use with my laptop. USB 3.0 and is powered through the USB and not a power supply. Think I had BB price match amazon on it.

What are your recommended video cards for around say 150-200$(don't have the cash to do a huge upgrade)? I'm thinking about upgrading a computer with a GTX 650 for some of the newer games and am looking at a R9 280.

I a fan of not spending money on more than 8gb of RAM and putting those funds towards other areas. For gaming at least. You could likely do better building it on your own. Other than that it seems good if you have no desire to build your own.

After doing a little more research it looks like this has some sort of sound issue. Reviews for the PC also say that the 32 gig of ram is a misallocation of resources.

I'm not skilled enough to build my own PC but I've thought about doing it for years.
