Read the Thrawn trilogy first (they were the first of the expanded universe novels). As Candyman said above, they are being replaced in the "canon" by the new movies.

There are plenty of other good books. I've enjoyed the Courscant Nights series (set between Sith and New Hope). Pretty much anything written by Timothy Zahn is good.

What do you mean 'placed in the canon'?
As in, these novels/characters/storyline will no longer be recognized as part of the expanded universe?

Yes. This quote is what started it all:
“You know, it’s not off-limits, and it’s certainly inspiring — I’m working on an animated show for [Lucasfilm] as well, Star Wars: Rebels, that will take inspiration from everywhere, but — I know for the movies, the canon is the canon, and the canon is the six films that exist.”
        Here some others:
Lucasfilm has just made an announcement about the future of the EU, and the short of it is that they’re starting over. Beginning with Star Wars Rebels, we’re entering into a new era of Star Wars in which new books, games, and comics will be part of the same universe. Lucasfilm has a story group in place to oversee creative development and to ensure that all Star Wars storytelling moving forward will be connected.

Kathleen Kennedy said, “We’re set to bring Star Wars back to the big screen, and continue the adventure through games, books, comics, and new formats that are just emerging. This future of interconnected storytelling will allow fans to explore this galaxy in deeper ways than ever before.”

Yes, the Star Wars people in charge came out in early 2014 and said all the Expanded Universe books from the past are now considered part of the Legends timeline and not part of the official Star Wars history. They started a new series of novels that are part of the history going forward. There are only a couple adult novels that have been released, Tarkin which is about the Grand Moff from A New Hope, and A New Dawn which is a prequel of sorts to the new Rebels animated show.

All the 200+ books (which I've read 90%) of from over years are still great reads but not part of the official Star Wars continuity anymore.

So many great ones. Heir to the Empire trilogy was what started the expanded universe, so its great. There is a Han Solo trilogy by AC Crispin that was awesome. There's the Jedi academy trilogy where Luke starts rebuilding the Jedi Order. Those are all 15+ years old. Some newer ones that came out of Episode 1-3 that I really enjoyed where Kenobi which was set just after Episode III as he begins his time on Tatooine watching over Luke. Also, there is Darth Plagueis which is the story of how Emperor Palpatine learned the dark side. Someone mentions Coruscant Nights trilogy, it was very good too and has a story about Vader tracking down remaining Jedi. If you read those, you might want to read the MedStar duology first because it introduces a few of the characters.

It can be overwhelming because there are so many books. So it all depends on what timeframe you want to read about (Old Republic, Clone Wars, Rebellion, Post Return of the Jedi, or Legacy which still follows the big 3 (Luke, Leia, and Han) but also feature their kids as big characters. Determine that, and if you like Jedi or Sith novels, and start from there.

I have read a ton of the Expanded universe. If I were you, I would start with "Heir to the Empire" by Timothy Zahn and read the other two in the trilogy - Dark Force Rising and the Last Command (this series is commonly referred to as the "Thrawn Trilogy"). This take place approximately 5 years after Return of the Jedi and features Grand Admiral Thrawn - the best villain in Star Wars other than the Emperor and Vader.

The Hand of Thrawn Duology - Specter of the Past and Vision of the Future - by Timothy Zahn is also really good and wraps up the story of the "Thrawn Trilogy."

My other favorites have been Kenobi by John Jackson Miller (takes place shortly after Episode III) and Darth Plagueis by James Luceno (takes place before Episode I).

I would probably watch the prequel trilogy before you read Plagueis or Kenobi though.

Thanks guys! Definitely a lot to digest, but I guess I'll get to reading. Hopefully most of these are on the Kindle store.

I'll second the recommendations on the Han Solo Trilogy, Kenobi, and Darth Plagieus.

If they are going to scrap things, they should just say the only thing that ever existed was the original trilogy IV V VI and go from there. They need to have a who shot JR moment and pretend those other movies and Jar Jar Binks never existed.

Speaking of the Star Wars novels, I bought the new Marvel Star Wars #1 digital comic today. Marvel's new Star Wars series is to be considered canon. The first story arc takes place between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back.

It is Disney behind it all now right?
