Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
A couple more thoughts that I had:
Spoiler1. How old are we to presume the new characters are? I peg Rey to be roughly 18-20 and Finn probably slightly older. I would think Kylo Ren is probably slightly older as well, somewhere in the 20-25 range?
2. Kylo Ren's age brings me to this theory. It's established that Rey is abandoned on Jakku when she's 5 years old. Based on her flashback, it seems that she was at the Jedi Academy when it was destroyed, so it's assumed that this happened when she was 5 and she was immediately moved to Jakku. If that's the case, and Kylo Ren is like 5 years older at most, that would mean a 10 year old Kylo Ren overthrew Luke and destroyed the academy before running off on his own. I'm not sure I buy it. My guess is that Snoke was a friend of Luke's and was a superior at the academy. He turned Kylo Ren and the two of them (mainly Snoke) overthrew the academy and then the two of them escaped together.NFL: Bills

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
This was just incredible. Everything just seemed right and the pace of the movie was perfect.
SpoilerAm I the only one who heard a lot of episode 3 in the score (not directly of course) especially the ending scene with Luke?Comment

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Okay, now that I got the "That was wonderful" out of the way and have had a night to sleep on it, my thoughts:
Spoiler
1. They definitely heavily hint towards Rey being Luke's child. I'm curious to see what exactly the story is there considering he basically would have had to meet the mother while running his Jedi Academy, and then the two would have split up sometime before this movie as well (obviously the mother could have been killed if Luke is indeed the father). In the very least, I thought the flashback scene at least showed that Luke had been training her. I also found it kind of interesting that Rey could remember that she was supposed to wait on Jakku for her parents to return but couldn't remember anything about her parents, but I suppose Luke could have wiped her memory or something (certainly seems to have made her forget about her presumed training).
2. They seemed to leave the door open to the "Finn is Lando's kid" theory given the "I was taken from my family when I was very young" line, but I suppose that plot point could just end there as well/he could be related to some made-up character that we haven't met yet.
3. They seemed to heavily hint towards some romantic interest between Rey and Finn. I feel like you don't really see interracial couples in movies too often, so I found that kind of interesting too (and I think I'm rooting for it to happen because I love both of them already).
4. I'm EXTREMELY intrigued to learn more about the Supreme Leader's backstory; where he came from, what the hell happened to his face, if he's an actual giant, etc. Also simply curious to figure out where exactly he's hiding since all we saw was a hologram throughout the movie.
5. Was that really all that Captain Phasma's role is? I gotta assume her role will be much larger moving forwards than it was in this movie/could see the relationship between her and Finn becoming a bigger plot point.
6. Is that all for Max von Sydow's character? Just that opening scene?
7. Did Han know that Ren was about to kill him like Obi-Wan did with Vader in A New Hope? I thought he did, but my brother disagreed.
8. There WERE a ton of similarities to A New Hope, but honestly,
9. Seriously though, please no more death stars. Let's move on to something new.
10. I love that Daniel Craig was the stormtrooper that let Rey escape lol.
#9 - Could NOT AGREE MORE.
#10 - Had no idea that was him. Hilarious!Comment

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
It was a Star Wars movie, albeit with a bit more deja vu than I was hoping for. Excellent launching point for a new generation of movies, merchandise and whatever else Disney has in store and I'm legitimately interested in what comes next.
Issues w/ the plot are forgivable with the focus on characters, which was a nice change of pace after the prequels. The exposition didn't feel like it was putting people in places to help the next domino in the story fall, but rather the story was being told in a way to let us focus on and learn more about the characters (with a couple support character exceptions, in spoiler below) - if that makes any sense.
SpoilerGeneral Hux and Phasma felt like wasted characters. Almost felt like this should have been one role, and just not have Phasma join the ground offensive that opened the movie. The trooper that fought Finn had a more meaningful role than either of them - that fight should have been with Phasma.
I'd be surprised if Carrie Fisher is back for another, not sure if it's age or what, but thought her role was acted poorly and she drug down most of the scenes she was in.
This was the nostalgia movie, time to move on from the old guard whereever possible. They did an excellent job cleaning up Mark Hamill, he looked like a badass Obi-Wan 2.0, but part of me wishes we were moving on from him as well, I'm sure VIII will probably be the end for him.Comment

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
I fell very mixed about this movie right now. The movie felt way to much like new hope to the point where it felt like the same movie but with just some new characters in it. I fell like this movie did nothing really new at all and even the villain was to much like Anakin before he is Vader and the villain fells like a poor mans Vader.Comment

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Movie was awesome. The captured what made Star Wars fun.
You can nitpick the hell out of this movie though. They left a lot to be explained in the sequels. But if JJ Abrams job was to set a great foundation for the future of the franchise, he delivered on all counts.
Now it's up to the future directors of Star Wars to clean up a bit where JJ left off. Disney delivered big time.Comment

Not for nothing, I felt like the new villain was EVERYTHING Anakin was suppose to be in the prequels and failed to be. The actor who portrayed him was great.
Not for nothing 2.0, I don't see a single thing wrong with pseudo retelling of old stories in the franchise. And the original stories were fantastic.Comment

Just got out of my noon showing. All in all, I definitely enjoyed it for what it was but certainly wasn't blown away by any means. I will go catch it again (this time at an IMAX theater) in a week or two to see how it holds up a second time.Comment

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
I only have 2 or so complaints:
Spoiler
1. I wanted more Luke but I understand his extremely limited role. Also, I would have preferred at the end that he used the force to take the light saber out of Rey's hand. That woulda been epic.
2. Carrie Fisher is awful and I'm shocked to just now learn she's only 59. Apparently she is/was a big smoker and it shows. Her voice was cringe-worthy and I thought she may have false teeth. Glad they kept her dialogue limited. Mark Hamill is a huge voice actor so I don't think the same issue will arise with him in VIII.Comment
