I'm definitely a fan of the Jon Snow and the wall!...loved the rag tag group of pip, gren and sam, would have to say daenerys storyline and the dragons has been slow this season and rather political, it's obvious she is going at some point make a push for the throne as it seems her army is more convincing than Stannis army at this point of time as it seems his main ally the fire queen is more smoke and mirrors than magic!...I just hope somebody takes off Cersei's smug head for giving Tyrion such a hard time!
Based on what I know, this season should just about wrap up book 3 (A Storm of Swords) with a little dash of Book 4 and Book 5 thrown in there. I'm an after the season book reader, so my information is based on adaptation notes that are provided by the various reviewers I read.

I'm pretty excited to dive into book 3. I find the story quite fresh even though I've seen it play out because of how dense the writing is. There were quite a number of chapters in book 2 that had so much foreshadowing that wasn't touched upon by the show that really tempted me to read ahead. Patience prevailed, and it gives me my Thrones fix while it's off-air.

Might not have as much time as you think:

      Spoiler

Even as a non-book reader, it must suck for the people who've been following the series for 20+ years and the show is going to finish before the books in all likelihood. I'm excited to see TellTale do GoT.

Not really. The last two books were pretty average IMO.

Even so, imagine if the last Harry Potter movie came out before the book. I would've hated it. Having to hear about the movie without all the extra details from the books that made you love it in the first place.

My quick estimate, some minor book spoilers so I'll tag it.

A character-by-character summary based on what they've covered in the show already and where it aligns with books...

Average is being kind for AFFC, that book was pretty painful. I really liked ADWD but it was still too slow but at least things happen and we're being set up for some great things in TWOW, which I hope and think will be an amazing book.

So GoT writers think Season 4 Finale is the best written episode yet and this is also the episode HBO submitted to the Emmy's for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series

If they are wrapping up a Storm of Swords the right way then I beleive them.

Seriously though GRRM needs to get off his ***. How has it been 4 years and he still doesn't have the Winds of Winter done.

While they won't do it the writers and show runners could easily wrap up books four and five in one season.

Oh, I think they will do it. This series is HBO's flagship; they're not going to risk interest sagging by meandering to the extent that GRRM did in Books 4 & 5, especially if they mean it when they say they want Game of Thrones to be 7-8 seasons, max. (My personal prediction is that Season 8 is split in two parts and the series ends in 2019.) As far as next season goes, I expect

                      MAJOR SPOILERS

I think it will take two seasons to do AFFC and ADWD. They'll cut the fat and maybe put a bit of Winds of Winter. That would bring us to 6, then Winds is 7 and 8 would be the last book. Maybe 9 at the most. If they needed to stall for a year, I'd enjoy a "filler" season of them doing Robert's Rebellion.
