Re: Game of Thrones Season 4 (aka A Storm of Swords: Part Deux)
Agreed 100%
Book spoilers
SpoilerThey rushed the Tyrion/Jaime scene. Omitting the line to Jaime about who all Cersei was sleeping with which changed his viewpoint a lot in the next books, and obviously the thing about Tysha which was the biggest reason he killed Tywin.
Overall I thought it was still a very good episode. Upset the omitted the epilogue from book 3 but not surprised.
Spoilerthey already covered the Tysha story earlier in the series. It has been built up all series, not just this seasonComment

Re: Game of Thrones Season 4 (aka A Storm of Swords: Part Deux)
Some questions regarding differences in book and show in regards to The Hound and Tyrion:
Spoiler
Did Brienne kill (or maim) The Hound in the books?
If not, what did you think of that change?
For me, I like Brienne, but I have to say I was a little disappointed that she took him down.
In the books (I've only read a bit of the first 3), The Hound is considered one of the deadliest swords in all the world - possibly top 3.
Tyrion - did Tysha really sleep with Tywin? Did they ever explain if she really loved Tyrion, or was just playing a role?
Thanks!

SpoilerNo Brienne and the hound never met in the books. In the books the hound is wounded in the fight that happens earlier in the series at the bar, he is wounded there and Arya leaves him to find the ship.
The reason they probably did it that way, was to bring more character interactions together. Brienne just talked about how she kept beating boys, and Arya sees the hound as this unbeatable force and Brienne just destroys him.
Shae is the woman he killed. Tysha was a woman from his past who he loved and his father forced him to watch as she was gang raped because she was a whore. Shae probably did love him at one point in time, but his marriage to Sansa and him sending her away calling her a whore and such probably hurt her more than it did him as she was much younger. Not to mention she lied at his trial and was then was sleeping with his father....Moderator

Re: Game of Thrones Season 4 (aka A Storm of Swords: Part Deux)
The show has provided a great visual, and the reason for many of the changes are because there are too many characters in the books and while the books have no "budget" they show does and blending of scenes and characters are the only way to get the show to even be produced.
The show does somethings better than the books, but they also miss the mark and importance of some scenes and characters IMO. Like this finale they provided visuals of some very important scenes but they left some equally important characters out completely.

Re: Game of Thrones Season 4 (aka A Storm of Swords: Part Deux)
It's nice that the show can really condense things that took too long in the books (or simply went into far too much detail in the books) but the trade off of missing out on important details and characters is frustrating. The visuals were so amazing, they really stepped up their game in Season 4. We got so many great shots from a distance of important cities and castles. The show has provided a great visual, and the reason for many of the changes are because there are too many characters in the books and while the books have no "budget" they show does and blending of scenes and characters are the only way to get the show to even be produced.

I thought Tyrion's story was rushed in the finale and really poor compared to the books but there wasn't much else the showrunners could do given where Tyrion's path had taken him in the show. Tysha would have confused every show-only fan if she was mentioned last night so that change makes sense given the context of the show.
Books
SpoilerShae vs Tysha, about the only thing they had in common was that they slept with Tyrion. The story in the book is so much better and I also like how Tyrion is furious with Jamie as well even though he helps Tyrion escape. That was one of my favorite Tyrion scenes in all the books, when Jamie is there saving his life and he has the balls to flip out on Jamie once he finds out about Tysha. Plus it makes Tyrion & Tywin's conversation all the better.
Things at the Wall are cool, the aerial shots of Stannis' riders closing in on Mance's camp was so awesome.
Brienne vs the Hound - meh, it was alright and made sense bringing those two stories together. Mixed feelings about Brienne taking him down but it's a minor gripe.
Dany is boring as usual.
Arya heading to Braavos was very well done, the last scene was perfect.
Bran and the cave was well done but what was up with the skeletons? We've seen White Walkers and wights, don't know where the Pirates of the Carribean stuff came from but it definitely made the protected cave scene that much cooler when Leaf led them to safety and all the skeletons shattered at the cave's entrance.
As for the controversial omit...
Books
Spoiler
The timing seemed perfect for the LSH cliff hanger but it might be better suited for Season 5. We haven't touched on the North all that much outside of the Boltons, not counting the Wall and the displaced Starks. We should get a lot of North-related stuff in S5. I can't remember the last time the Frey's were even mentioned. It might have been TOO much of an out-of-nowhere thing to include in this finale.- Stannis heading to Deepwood Motte and the Winterfell
- Wyman Manderly and the "Arya Stark" wedding
- Davos and his quest
- Theon's story
I think the showrunners can set the table a little bit by reintroducing the Frey's and some of the other houses of the North before debuting LSH. Hell they could even make Merrett Frey a recurring character throughout S5 to add some depth to the whole thing. Might make LSH even more badass than in the books.
Lastly, not having Coldhands is a pretty big disappointment for me partially because I think he still might play an important role in the books that'd we'd ultimately miss out on in the show.

Re: Game of Thrones Season 4 (aka A Storm of Swords: Part Deux)
Yall gotta stop looking at stuff from the book reader's point of view. I've read the first 3 and knew what happens but it does not take away from my experience. I love the book and show on each of its own merits. Book readers know the major plots of the story, enjoy that. For the most part, the show stays true to major plots. If anything, I wish they did extended scenes and put them on the blu-ray disks.Last edited by SoMiss2000; 06-16-2014, 10:55 AM."Never trust a big butt and a smile."-Ricky Bell

A chart marking the progress of books (chapter-by-chapter) and what's been covered in the show.
Spoiler
Of course they're skipping a bunch of AFFC chapters since it was so boring. Interesting to see on paper how much of ADWD they've already covered too. Things will definitely get interesting in Season 5 & 6!"You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Book spoiler but at this point it's not a huge deal
SpoilerI know they told the story of Tysha earlier, but they I don't recall them revealing that she really wasn't a whore and she really did love Tyrion. That got Tyrion pissed with Jaime and was also a large reason that Tyrion killed Tywin.PS: You guys are great.

They didn't, which is why many of us feel they dropped the ball re: that scene. That's a big deal and has an impact on Jaime and Tyrion moving forward.AUBURN TIGERS

OK so my wife was probably talking when the final scene was on. I thought Arya gave the captain the coin and basically bought passage to the wall first class. But she's headed to Braavos? I guess that makes sense because she's pretty much on her own and needs to get away from anyone who may be trying to track her.

What exactly was that coin and what all can it do?
No book spoilers please. If you can't answer that without a spoiler, that's ok.Chalepa Ta Kala.....Comment

Yeah I was let down by it's omission as well. That and *book spoiler*Spoilerthe voiding of of Tywins bowels and Tyrion's comments about that afterward. Although I guess they were trying to keep it serious and that surely would have been a comedic moment.PS: You guys are great.

No need for spoilers. Jaquen Hagar gave her the coin and said if you ever want to learn to do what I do. Find a ship heading to Bravos, give the captain this coin and say "Vahlar Morgulis".OK so my wife was probably talking when the final scene was on. The captian said he wouldn't take her North, then she remembered and gave him the coin and said the words.
Anymore than that is spoiler territory.
