I think I may be a bit disappointed if it turns out the butler really did do it.

So it's more of me projecting my desire that Marty or Cohl is the man behind the mask.
I personally think your omg moment is going to be Rust and Marty getting to the end of the trail, but being killed just before the two new detectives find another pair of kids locked away.

The last two episodes have repeatedly foreshadowed that the path that Rust and Marty have resumed is all but a suicide mission. Marty basically saying goodbye to his ex and wrapping up lose ends, her knowing and asking Rust to not get Marty involved in something that will get him hurt, Rust constantly referencing the debt they need to pay, their willingness to kidnap and hold a powerful sheriff at gun point and Rust's comment that he hopes the lady's death is not the end comment is wrong all point to this being a one way street for the two. I think they will solve the case but their solution will never see the light of day and the next two detectives will pick up the trail by finding two kids in a container. Thus, death not being the end of the investigation, but despite their efforts, the circle is not broken and no matter what is done the same events, only with different players, are going to unfold no matter what happens. But in the end their debts will be paid.

The OMG might be that everyone is involved except those 2 and even Marty is unknowingly involved because he's too busy pleasing his desires instead of doing his job. Everything is in plain sight and they missed it.

Or there might be some big reveal around the flat circle theory. This might be 100th time this story has played out for them, Cohle clearly doesn't know what's going to happen next although after it happens, he knows its not the first time he's seen it or lived it. Maybe he ends up picking up on that. Although I'm not sure what difference it makes because there is no free will as far as I understand the theory, but there may be limited free will, but no matter what they do next time around, Marty still finds those kids, Marty still pulls the trigger, Marty and Rust end up in that storage shed about to do what they are going to do. It didn't matter if Rust went to Alaska or wrestled alligators on the bayou, he'd still be back there with Marty in that shed about to attempt to blow the lid off that entire region.

Really looking forward to see how they wrap this up.

Interesting you bring different players into it. And they repeat the story. Certainly if Rust and Marty get waxed, the cycle is just going to continue until someone can put an end to it. And if Marty and Cohle go down so does all the evidence. Good luck piecing that all back together again.

Rust clearly wants it all to stop. He's dead man walking for sure and he hopes there is no afterlife. He's checked out, just needs to pay his debt and be done.

Marty knows this is dangerous, but I don't think he sees it as an all out suicide mission. Not sure he'd buy into it if that was the case. He just wants to pay his debt, he thinks he can right the wrong, but if he comes to the conclusion that he could have prevented all this garbage years ago, he may want to check out too.

I think that is going to come from the discovery of who the Yellow King is.

I don't think Rust has checked out I think he has finally accepted what he feels is his fate. When Rust was asked if he was religious because of the crucifix above his bed he said no he just liked to meditate about what it must have been like on the hill contemplating your coming crucifixion. I think he has the foresight to know that there is no coming back from this and has accepted his role as a martyr and just wants to wrap up all the violence and degradation that has been his life. And he is hoping the lady was wrong because for him to give his life, death has to be the end of it or else his sacrifice was meaningless.

I agree I don't think Marty knows for sure this is a one way street but he has his suspicions. And I think once they get to the end he is going to see how close to home it all really hit and where he could have stopped it (if he actually was as perceptive, in tune or as good of a detective as Rust) and the fact that even though protecting defenseless children has always been the one thing that was important to him and his only selfless act throughout his life he wasn't able to protect the one that should have been the most important to him. I think he will go all the way to try and end it and it will cost him his life.

Yeah, by checkout I meant he's come to term with the fact that this is the end. He'll be focused, but I think he wants it all to end. He must be miserable. He probably thinks that this is the only way it can end....Cigarettes certainly can't kill the man.

Did I miss something? Did they hint at or say that Marty's daughter had been abused? Or are you guys suggesting that will be part of the ending?

Ahh yeah, that's right. But where did she get it from? She's not like any of the other victims, I don't see how she connects.

My theory is its Marty's step dad. When they were talking about the drawings he made a shady comment like everything from kids nowadays is about sex. Like he didn't want them talking to her about it. There's also the fact that there were 5 dolls around the naked one that fits in with the 5 masked figures in the Tuttle pictures and videos at least hinting at a connection.

Sounds plausible. Honestly, with everything that's been going on in the show, I had forgotten about the symbols and familiar images with his daughter. And if I remember correctly, didn't Marty recognize it and show Rust, but nothing ever really came of it? Interesting.

I definitely see there being a showdown with a lot of major deaths though, since you've got the governor and his powerful family involved, a sheriff and other members of the force involved in a cover-up, and Rust and Marty ready to do anything it takes to settle this debt that they feel responsible for and has been weighing on their consciences, particularly Rust.

I think in episode 3 Russ meets the man with the scars cutting grass outside that Tuttle school, but has no idea it's him because he has a beard and the scars are hidden. It's the same guy we saw at the end of ep 7 I do believe.

I would bet many name actors are lining up for roles given the strong performances by MM, WH, etc.
