It came out during the "baby boom of found footage," and still might be the only one of the disaster film variety (don't think District 9 counts, and is a bit more of a documentary). I'd say it's very popular, just polarized because some people simply went one-and-done, really only cared about wondering what the monster was and moved on.

It is the highest grossing movie for the year 2008 and the 2nd highest grossing January released movie ever.

Yeah that's not right...While it was the top movie in January 2008, it only made $80M, good for 39th in 2008.

made $40.1 million on its opening weekend, which at the time was the most successful January release (record then taken by Ride Along in 2014 with a weekend gross of $41.5 million).[57] Worldwide, it has grossed $170,602,318, making it the first movie in 2008 to gross over $100 million.[58]

I didn't mean just what it made in 2008 like ur link says.
Regardless my point was it was a damn popular movie.

When you get outsold by Ride Along I don't know if I'd say it's a damn popular movie. Sure people saw it but being first to gross $100 million isn't saying much when the movie came out in January.

That's not saying a lot. Typically January isn't a big movie month plus if you count for inflation the numbers might be different. When tickets cost $10 a person vs say the 70s when they were like $2 a person. Not many people have to see a movie to have a high grossing number.

Movies were also a lot cheaper to make in the 70's. Lol

How? Avatar is number 1 until you count for inflation then Gone with the Wind beats Avatar by a fair margin.
