    Re: Billions (Showtime Series)

Billions is definitely an arcade (not simulation) look at the financial industry and the uber-powerful and uber-rich that run it but it never fails to entertain. After a 15-month Covid driven delay the last five episodes started airing a few weeks ago with the season finale dropping this Sunday.

One of the few shows even worth watching at this point. Waiting to see what they do to poor James Spader this season.

        Billions (Showtime Series)

I’m an episode behind because I have to wait for the people I’m watching with to be free, but we just finished watching Chuck make eggs for what felt like 8 minutes and then the thing I’ve been hoping the show would avoid since the very beginning happened. And Taylor is still here. It’s morphed from one of my favorite shows to almost becoming a hate watch lol. Also just can’t get over beardless Chuck. Seems like he lost 15 points in intimidation.

Yeah. I didn’t get the “Chuck Makes Eggs” short.

Last episode was flames and season finale should be sweet. I still enjoy the show even though the references are way over the top and way over done.

That scene is...wait for it...surprise...a reference! To this movie:

Have to plead ignorance because I’ve never heard of the movie let alone the scene. Billions is great at the insertion of culture references into their episodes.

Oh they are beyond overkill with the references, I wouldn't even call it great anymore lol. This is the number one complaint I see from people who used to love the show and now hate it...and I'll admit it was a glass-shattered thing for me...didn't really notice the overuse of references and now I can't unsee it.

I remember Lara telling Axe “Apollonia died in a car bomb” before I saw The Godfather, I think that was season two. They’ve bothered me ever since.

I think my issue with the show is all of my favorite shows have some aspect of family to them, makes the characters feel more human. Now Axe is just a rich guy.

The cultural references that have apparently been amped up since "early Billions" have caused people to hate the show? Really?? I mean it's not like they infiltrate all the dialogue.

I think to really be a Billions fan you have to appreciate the OVER THE TOPNESS of it. The show is essentially a power struggle before and after Axe rid himself of the hot wife and kids.

Anyway, sorry I can't discuss the show with you anymore because you don't watch it.

That's not just it but it's part of the reason. For the record, I'm not one of the people that hates the show, I still enjoy it but I also can't help but notice the overboard culture references. It's like everyone talks the same and no one in real life talks like the people do in this show.

I do think the show is less compelling than the first 3 seasons. Season 5 especially pre-covid was easily the worst season to date and while they've bounced back somewhat, they still wiffed big time like with Hall...they show Hall listening above Prince's floor for that one scene but he never listened at any other time to figure out this was a big setup? Also Hall NEVER let himself be seen before...then he just walks into Axe's office with everyone else? And the painter was a very stupid subplot which I think they realized during the break and thankfully wrote him out of the show.

Regardless of what I can critique about it, I don't take the show too seriously and thus am still entertained and I'm invested enough that I have to watch it the moment the new episode is released. I will watch it to the end no matter what and it will be ranked one of my top shows of all time.

Those are like gems to me, forget maintaining realistic dialogue for a few seconds...but to each his own.

I will admit that most of the actors absolutely nail the delivery of the references and very few seem forced so they definitely got that going for them. Wags in particular...he's one of the greatest characters of all-time, I absolutely love the writing for his character, especially what he did in the last episode to get revenge!

I wish it were over the top. Wags is the only one who hits that bar for me, and everyone having seen every tv show and movie ever made. Taylor, the painter, the Mike Prince storyline, just drag to me. Luckily I can get my rich family fix from Succession.
