I thought we'd get a more of a cliffhanger after the very end of last year's finale being pretty weak.

Couldn't they at least throw us a bone and kill off Pastor Tim and his family at the end? Ugh.... This season was weak. Hopefully, they have something good in store for the final season, but I have huge doubts after this dud.

IDK what y'all are on about, I really enjoyed the season. The way I see it, this season was the dramatic set-up for a season full of spy **** and people at each other's throats. I like how it ended with Phillip completing his emotional disconnect from his spy life. It's been a slow burn yeah but it's been central to the development of the main plot of the show. Not sure why we're still giving time to Martha, though but that was a nice vignette so I'm not too broken up about it.

Couldn't they at least throw us a bone and kill off Pastor Tim and his family at the end?
I mean, that would be the antithesis of the Tuan/Pasha situation. Elizabeth preaches the necessity of a deft touch in how they handle situations and can't go around offing people all the time. They're trying to groom their daughter to follow their footsteps and while I think they reached this conclusion in a little bit of a deus ex machina fashion, if they just gat Pastor Tim you have to think Paige would eventually find out and then that's a big ole can of worms.

        With that said, **** Tuan.

If for whatever reason they had to kill off Pastor Tim Elizabeth would tell Paige immediately. I've promoted the idea to off him before, but it turns out the guy is so squeaky clean if you end him it makes the spy couple look bad. I half expected at some point the good Pastor would make a move on young Paige, thus rationalizing his demise, but that would be stupid on his part.

If Stan doesn't figure out who they are and they come to some sort of climax like back in season 1 when they're waiting for Elizabeth to go pick up the recording, I'll be extremely disappointed.

I don't like this sensitive and emotional human Philip. I want the guy who went into the creepy guy's back yard and ruined him with a spatula for hitting on his daughter.

I thought the season was decent, but it didn't live up to the greatness of the first four seasons, IMO. The finale was kind of weak.

I thought this whole season sucked. The first 4 were good but man this one was disappointing.

I've been going through the seasons on Amazon Prime since I missed most of season 5 and catching up on this show is always a pleasure. I'm halfway through season 4. Nina still gets me. The character drama is just so well done and it's even better to watch going through the show with an episode or two a day.

I'm starting a new thread so that we don't have to be reminded of the piece of ****ing **** that was Season 5 every time we come to discuss the new season.

Re: The Americans - Season 5 (March 7th)

Over the past several months I've been going through seasons 1-5 via Amazon Prime. I'm two episodes away from finishing season 5. Maybe it's the luxury of having the ability to watch multiple episodes at once as opposed to waiting a week per episode, but I don't feel a drop in quality in season 5 whatsoever.

The series has always been a slow-burn opting to focus on character narratives, internal turmoil, and dynamics of character relationships rather than using twists or turns of narratives or oversaturating with action. Season 5 continues that thread as Philip continues to struggle with his reconciliation of his job, lifestyle, his motivations, and morals. Balancing that with foil characters who are also struggling with their duty - some sacrificing themselves while others essentially quit - reinforces that turmoil. Philip and Elizabeth continue to grow stronger as a one-on-one relationship, but grow apart in other areas (primarily Paige).

There's a lot of great moments in this season for me. It may not have as much narrative flux as season 4, but I haven't felt a massive drop in quality at all.
