Just keeping it in the realm of entertainment this is how it is going to be everywhere from now on for any movie, show, game, etc. that revives an iconic franchise and decides to deviate from what some in the fandom consider immutable story, character, mechanics, aspects of that franchise.

If I was a director/creator in any medium I would definitely only want to work on my own IP and not deal with the headache of any long standing gatekeeping fanbase.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

        Yup and yup.

Fans are very much attached to preconceived notions from previous films that anything that deviates or "breaks" it (ala The Last Jedi) sucks.

I'm a huge, huge horror fan and have seen films "retconning," altering and completely ignoring past works. All that to say, it doesn't bother me as much to see something be subverted or altered.

Especially, when it is just entertainment and one can choice to ignore films, characters or events that they don't like or disagree with.

Instead, people scream bloody murder, bitch and moan until they are red in the face. And whine that someone like Rian Johnson "ruined" the film series in the case of Star Wars.

Disney/LucasFilms was in an unenviable position either way regardless of what they did with this IP. Short of making stand - alone, one - off films that stick entirely to previously established lore they were ****ed. Continuing the "Skywalker Saga" was a foolish decision even if I enjoyed all three films.

Not true. They had two paths to take that wouldn't have messed with any of the films and made their own trilogy. Old Republic, Mandalorian wars, a different galaxy detached from the Rebel Alliance and the Empire.

Having not seen any of this new trilogy, and following along with what is happening within the SW fanbase after the release of this film, it is so strange what the fandom has turned into lol. It's like following politics. And I never want to hear the terms "Reylo," "shipping" or "retcon" ever again.

That is my point. They should have left the "Skywalker Saga" behind and gone on to other stories, mythos in the same universe (preferably not in "trilogy" form).

Unfortunately, that would still disappointed some, minor or major, subset of the fanbase that wanted to see more Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, et cetera being involved.

Anyway, this Youtuber that I watch gives a great breakdown - whether you think the new trilogy was good or bad - why this Disney led Star Wars fell apart.

Lastly, I think the negative reaction to these current movies and the prequel trilogy is exactly why Lucas was content to no longer make Star Wars films. Fans have a love - hate, overly critical and near sadomasochistic feeling towards the series it seems to me and anything that they deem as not a "Star Wars movie" (whatever the **** that means).

                Re: Star Wars: Episode IX

It is lunacy IMO. Pure internet fodder.

I enjoyed TFA and ROS. I thought TLJ was weak. It has some crappy scenes and felt off.

Can I still enjoy elements of TLJ? Absolutely. Much like I enjoy Obi-Wan’s mission in AOTC.

It’s just a freaking movie. If you don’t like it......life goes on. Fandom is whaky and scary for Star Wars and other series like Star Trek. I crack up about it to be frank.

I played with Star Wars toys between 1977 and 1983. Huge part of my childhood. Probably a bigger part of it than the movies themselves.

The kids love it. And that is all that matters to Lucas and now Disney. Not a bunch of crabby late 40 and early 50 somethings moaning about cannon. LMFAO.

If the kids eat it up......it is a success.

                My 2 cents.

                  The above is true.

My kids love star wars. They don't care about cannon. They want it to be cool and to them it is. I personally liked The Last Jedi the best of the 3 in this series. I really enjoyed the whole Luke and Rey interactions. Doesn't make me a bad star wars fan. It's just my opinion. I get why people don't like the Last Jedi as well.

Like I said previously, I liked Rise of Skywalker but would have liked to see a few things different. No use in arguing, it is a movie. You can like it or not. That's the nice thing about movies, we don't have to agree.

                    Re: Star Wars: Episode IX

I took the family to see this last night; I haven't read through the entire thread, but I'll some thoughts.

First off, I'm not a huge Star Wars fan...I think they're entertaining and enjoy them for what they are, but I really don't get into the history, details, etc. I just watch it, enjoy it for entertainment, move on.

So, having said that, I thought this movie couldn't make up it's mind...at a lot of points I found myself saying "this is entertaining...good stuff..." and at other points I found myself cringing uncomfortably (particularly at the end with the Jedi's all around Rey, Ben bringing her back, the awkward kiss). All in all, I felt the movie was rushed...but it was fun. FWIW, my kids, who are diehard Star Wars fans, LOVED it. In the end, I guess that's all that really matters.

I really enjoyed TFA - thought it was very well done and I'd watch again, but these last two I'm fine to not see again.

Regarding fandom, I've never understood why fans of a movie or a sitcom or video game get criticized the way they do when sports fans with the same passion are rarely subjected to the same standard.

Not to get off topic but it does go both ways. If I said I am a Browns fan, which I am, and said back in August I think they have a chance to go to the playoffs, would I not get people chomping back at me about it even though I was only supporting my favorite team?

Back on topic, my above post was in agreement with the post before mine about the appeal crowd. That of kids and potentially new fans to the series. That is what this series targeted. Not knocking long time fans, I have been one since the 90s when I saw them the first time. Just stating that cannon isn't going to be followed to the letter when you are trying to make fans of a whole new generation of fans. And I think that is what these movies accomplished. Both of my kids would say the new trilogy is their favorite.

To me the series wasn't without flaws. But as movies they were entertaining.

The only thing I can think of is sports is human competition. It has consequence in terms of winning, losing, fans who pay for season tickets, athletes being paid extraordinary amounts of money etc etc.

Anyone who treats their favorite film/TV franchise like a favorite sports franchise, idk what to say. It will end poorly for you. Especially if you are going to be emotionally invested and attach your ego to the perceived success of these projects.

To be fair, replace the word athletes with actors and that's practically how to describe movies.

People buy tickets to see the good guys beat the bad guys for 3 hours, while both the good guys and the bad guys get crazy amounts of money.

No one ever talks about how outrageous the salary’s are for top actors and actresses.

And they shouldn’t. Just like they shouldn’t for athletes.

Movies are far cheaper ticket prices than professional sporting events. Not even a comparison.

To get emotionally invested into “Star Wars” or any movie series for that matter to incite the internet outrage we see is beyond absurd.

                                IMO.
