      I...don't understand the problem here.

007, not James Bond, is going to be a woman. There is precedent for there being female agents, why not let a woman take that role in the movies too?

Honestly, sounds like a fun idea.

Me thinks a lot of them didn't realize this because they were reacting to the headline, not the actual article. Which.... let's just say, is pretty on brand. The goalposts have already started moving.

Didn't Craig get a serious injury during a shoot? maybe their looking towards the next step without him
Kenny: Ok Vic, I'm ready for some girl on girl action.
Vic: No Kenny, that's girl versus girl.
              Kenny: What's the difference?
Vic: Well, in one, one girl wins. In the other....
              Kenny: Everyone wins?!?!

British franchise yes but this movie, as most anything made here in the United States, is made with the intent to sell tickets here in America.

But you know, even if targeting British audience, which they're not, still a misfire.

Yes and he wants to be done with Bond. With that being said, why not go with Idris Elba? He would be a great Bond I think.

Re: 007 is now a woman

I personally think part of the problem is the article and the source.

I honestly don't give a crap if 007 is a woman or man. It can be one of the Spy Kids. It's a number assigned to an agent. It's whatever to me.

I like that the franchise is trying to do something different here. My actual issue is why they are doing it and it's in the source's comment.

"Bond is still Bond but he’s having to learn to deal with the world of #MeToo.”

This is all kinds of cringe for me. I'm definitely someone that doesn't understand why it's apparently socially unacceptable to some Americans to be socially aware or politically correct or to blast off on social injustices. However, that last bit screams to me Hollywood throwing their olive branch instead of just extending it. It's almost like, "Look, we do care about women. So take the damn branch and love us again."

If Hollywood really wants to show they care, stop trying to pander and actually take action. Fair pay. Safe work environments.

In the end, doesn't matter to me. Never been a fan of the 007 franchise anyway. But the news caught my eye so here I am commenting. I guess they did their job.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

Re: 007 is now a woman

It's from an unnamed source in an article originally published in the Daily Mail and regurgitated through the Post. I would just ignore that quote honestly.

The more I read on this the more I think we're just going to have a Black Wai Lin.

I initially had a bad reaction but someone made this exact point about it to me and my stance has changed. I’m in a wait and see mode for it and am keeping an open mind.

Certainly way too early to be upset about it.

The issue for me is that the James Bond franchise is just that, the BOND franchise. The entire franchise is based on the literary character by Ian Fleming. Some creative liberties have been taken over the years, but the franchise is about 007 James Bond and anyone else is just there for support. Now, if the movie maintains him as the central figure but just adds this supporting character who has taken over his code name for the single movie then that's fine. If the movie/franchise becomes about this new 007 then it might as well be a new spy franchise.
