Re: Covers Good or Better Than Original?
Most covers are brutal representations of good songs. I am not a Manson fan but he does a really good job at taking a song and adding a little to it to make it sound like his own.
the best cover that I can think of is the Faith No More cover of War Pigs. Better tahn the original? Hell no, War Pigs is a classic. But still great none the less.
A more appropriate thread would be Bad Covers because that is what 95% of them areActually...believe it or not from my physique... I'm a light eater - Clay T. ShaverComment

Re: Covers Good or Better Than Original?
There's a lot of crack smoking going on in this forum...
Drop the pipe kids.... drop the pipe.
I'll almost OK a cover if a Legend wants to cover a great song (e.g. Johnny Cash covering NIN, Marvin Gaye covering the Beatles). But, upstart bands trying to release an Insta-Hit is untalented BS. Do it as a B-side... a hidden track... don't bite a great song for the easy path.
And...more importantly... you can't do a song better than the original, because music is art.... and the original vision is what the music is supposed to be.

If you have a different/live version then nevermind, but No Doubt has never released a cover of that song officially.
I agree, most covers suck. A lot of bands nowadays have a hit cover, and then go nowhere, guess they got their 15 minutes.Nintendo Switch Friend Code: SW-7009-7102-8818Comment

Re: Covers Good or Better Than Original?
I was rereading this thread and thought of a cover that blows away the original in such a way that people forget it's a cover in the first place.

In chronological order:
Shinedown releases their debut album.
Fly From The Inside becomes a radio hit.
45 becomes radio gold and gets unreal amounts of spins.
Shinedown plays the song at Freebird on a whim in dedication of all the help the Van Zant's had given them.
They then play it at WAAF Boston when asked to do a cover.
The cover becomes a cult classic on all rock-radio stations.
They then re-release their debut a year later with Simple Man as an extra song.
They now dedicate the song to Dimebag every single time they play it live.Comment

Pillar - Sunday, Bloody Sunday (U2) (Not gonna make any comparison, but I do really like the Pillar version)
Kid Rock - Feel Like Makin' Love (Bad Company) (I really like the Kid Rock version)
H-Blockx - The Power (originally by Snap) (better than original)
H-Blockx - Ring Of Fire (Johnny Cash) (A more upbeat version, but I won't say its on the same level)
Audio Adrenaline - Free Ride (Edgar Winter, I think) (as good as original)
Dropkick Murphys - Fortunate Son (Creedence Clearwater Revival) (No where near the original, but interesting)
Dropkick Murphys - It's a Long Way to the Top (AC/DC) (It's ok, not too sure about the comparison tho)
Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes (The Who) (Obviously nowhere as good as the original, but it's one of the few LB songs I can still listen to.)
and finally, I don't know if it counts, but Vanilla Ice's rock remake of Ice Ice Baby (which he called Too Cold) is better than the originalComment
