Re: Covers Good or Better Than Original?

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower" is my favorite cover of all time. Dylan gets the credit for the incredible lyrics though....Comment

Re: Covers Good or Better Than Original?

I've been listening to a ton of Lostprophets lately (for better or worse), and I've found by them covers of Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River", The Strokes "Reptilia", Duran Duran's "A View To A Kill", and a song "Sweet Dreams My L.A. Ex", who I don't know performed originally. Whether they are better than originals is debatable, but I like em.Comment

It is one of my favorites as well, Hendrix takes it to a new level, even though Dylan's version was already great.Comment

Re: Covers Good or Better Than Original?

There's a lot of crack smoking going on in this forum...

Drop the pipe kids.... drop the pipe.

I'll almost OK a cover if a Legend wants to cover a great song (e.g. Johnny Cash covering NIN, Marvin Gaye covering the Beatles). But, upstart bands trying to release an Insta-Hit is untalented BS. Do it as a B-side... a hidden track... don't bite a great song for the easy path.

And...more importantly... you can't do a song better than the original, because music is art.... and the original vision is what the music is supposed to be.

Damn lazy *** MTV hack generation. Agreed 100% Clay. 99% of all covers are horrible. A cheap trick to fill out an album.

I actually like the Shinedown version of Simple Man. Better than the original? I don't think so, but I do like it.Comment

If I mentioned this earlier then my bad. It's been a long time for me on here.

I played it to some people and they actually thought it was Marvin singing! That's how good of a cover it was.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Covers Good or Better Than Original?

I would say this is the best "cover" of a song, personally; I love both versions (and like DMB's version, decently) but if I remember correctly even Dylan favors Hendrix's versionFAN OF: Georgetown Hoyas, DC United, Cincinnati Bengals, St. Louis Cardinals, West Ham United, Arkansas State Indians, and Memphis GrizzliesComment
