Good job, I'm happy for you. I don't play them either, but he does, so what? It's how a lot of people get started playing poker.

I know I started with play money. It helped me. Hell, if it wasn't for the play money tables I probably wouldn't be playing poker. Where did it get me? Making more per hour then I could ever hope to make doing anything else.

guys trust me I would be playing but I don't have a credit card and the only way I'm gonna get real money is by playing these free rolls to build up any sort of bank roll. I play a ton at school 20 bucks a game and I do ok, I'm smart enough to know I'm not great but I have always been a good tournament player and free rolls are just big tournys.

Superstar, doesn't bother me a bit man. I started out the exact same way. Built my bankroll up a little bit, started playing real games and went from there.

Do you have a bank account? Because if you do you can set up a neteller account and put money straight from your bank account on-line. Let me know if you need any help if that's the way you choose to go.

yeah I've got a bank account and stuff, it's just so weird being exactly one month from being 20 years old and my parents still don't want me having a credit card. The only time I've ever put money in was 50 bucks on party poker, but I had a bad experience first night lost my cool and got my money taken by a good limit player. So yeah once I place a few more times I'll start playing some ring games with a decent buy in.

I'm not sure if the same is true in the states, but north of the border nearly all credit cards aren't able to be used to deposit money into either neteller or online cardrooms. I know it also happens in the states, but I'm not sure if it's as widespread as up here. My crappy MBNA Mastercard will let me do it, but I hate the damn thing, and will be cancelling it in the next few months.

I ended up going to the bank and got them to write up a cheque linked to my account (I have no checkbook) and used that to link up with it. If you're worried about giving out your main banking information, you can always setup a seperate, small account somewhere and use that to fund it.

heh, how pissed would they be if you got one anyways? If you can't handle your money, they're definitely rotten to have around, but they're also a really good idea to have to build a good credit rating (assuming you pay it off). If you apply as a student, it shouldn't be too hard to get.

Your mistake was going to Party Poker where the minimum limit games are .50/1, as a beginner you should play at either Poker Stars or Paradise Poker where they have limit holdem games with blinds as low as .02/.04 or .04/.08 cents. Your money can definitely last longer there.

Also, buy and read a good poker book. The best one for beginners is "Getting Started in Hold Em" by Ed Miller. Or, "Winning Low Limit Hold Em" by Lee Jones.

I've read the books, and watched videos, neither are very good for online play btw. like I said I'm good at tourny play. Placed in the money for the 4th straight night last night, just don't have much of a bankroll to show for it.

Personally I think anyone that went to Party over Stars or Paradies made a good choice, well, if they want to make money that is. Party is known for having the easiest games out of all the sites. Stars is known for having the toughest.

Which books and videos? That would make a big difference. There's a lot of bad stuff out there. None of the videos I've watched have been worth anything, the worst being Helmuth's garbage online-poker video.

I'm actually nearly finished Getting Started in Hold'Em right now. It's been a really good introductory book, and it explains core concepts like pot odds and implied pot odds very well. The limit section is really well done, and the no-limit section, although short, was pretty interesting as well. Definitely a great introductory book, even if you've been playing for a while.

I would if I was playing more than just hold'em. A lot of reviews I've read have said it's not worth buying for the hold'em section(s) alone.

Working my way through the 2+2 library first.

getting started in hold'em -> small stakes hold'em -> theory of poker -> poker for advanced players

And also still have Internet Texas Hold'em (Hilger) and Harrington On Hold'Em (Dan Harrington) to read.
