Resident Evil 5 Versus Mode Dated

Capcom announced today that the new online multiplayer Versus mode for Resident Evil 5 will be available for download on Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, April 7, 2009 for 400 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE, or $4.99 on the PlayStation Network. This new mode adds a deadly twist to Resident Evil 5’s multiplayer, pitting players against each other in a contest of survival, a marked departure from the central co-operative nature of the game.

Versus allows up to four players to match wits in online battles across two very different game types. Slayer’s Rule is a point-based game that challenges players to kill Majinis. In Survivor’s Rule, players hunt the most dangerous game, each other! Players can begin the hunt as Chris, Sheva or other secret characters, and choose from either one-on-one or two-versus-two team matches for either of the two gameplay styles.

No company would ever do that to us.

If that's true, hopefully MS does the right thing.

Resident Evil 5 Versus Mode Hands-On

For $5 you get a tiny download that opens up a brand new four-player online mode. Save your money. Even if you love RE5, the Versus Mode DLC is a poorly thought out offering that should have been a whole lot better (and cheaper).
These aren't a bad idea and they do add some nice little wrinkles to a game of Mercenaries. But there are some problems. Even though this is essentially Mercenaries Mode, none of my unlocked characters carried over, so I basically had to start from scratch. And while it's cool for characters to have different abilities and weapons when in a game that's just solo play or co-op, the different unlockable characters can add too great an advantage in competitive play. Wesker, for example, can zip forward ten feet for a melee attack. Awesome to use against zombies, but unbelievably cheap when it's used against another player. The characters aren't balanced for competitive play. It just seems completely lazy, like Capcom thought "add two more players and charge $5" instead of "how can we make an incredible competitive experience?"

Versus is a bad idea for a game with RE5's control scheme. This isn't a cover shooter like Gears, where players are taking advantage of flanking their opponents or where you can use caution to keep yourself alive. RE5 is a stand-in-the-open-and-shoot-zombies type of game. And it doesn't work well when other players start shooting at you. I came across some laughable moments where all four players are just standing facing each other shooting one another in the face and hoping to get in a kill shot. It makes RE5 look dumb. And that's coming from the biggest RE5 fan in the office.

Despite its problems, Versus Mode could have been a lot better if Capcom put any creative thought behind its design. For example, if I'm in the lead in Slayers, it would be beneficial for me to prevent other players from smashing a time bonus. After all, if time runs out soon, I win. But the scoring is still geared towards Mercenaries Mode. It's not just that I want to be in the lead, but I still am trying to reach the same scoring milestones as in the single-player version. It's just that I have some other players getting in my way. Doing something, anything, to make this more than just Mercenaries with four people would have helped. Adding rounds like a more traditional multiplayer game or altering the entire scoring system or adjusting how the time bonuses work or changing the levels or balancing the characters--anything at all would have been a plus. But Versus is little more than an overpriced add-on.

Looks like PS3 owners won’t be having ALL the fun. The latest details have emerged for the new Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition that will feature a new mission featuring Jill and Chris working together and yes, that mission will be available for Xbox 360 owners in a form that is currently unknown.

The mission will be set three years before the events of RE5 and the scenario will be Jill and Chris searching for Ozwell E. Spencer, a plot point that was scene briefly in flashbacks over the course of RE5. The new mission will be about 2 hours long and feature more horror then what the main game contains (though face it Capcom, you didn’t set the bar very high with RE5).

My only concern at this point is how it’s going to be distributed. If it’s an independent disk, then I believe the Xbox 360 community has the right to riot. If it’s just DLC (which is more likely) then it will be about hitting the right price point. Two hours of game play to me is not worth 800 MP by a long shot. If the price does hit the sweet spot though then this will definitely be great content to pick up. What do you all think?

                              More details unveiled.

RE5's Chris Is Heavy Metal, But Sheva Is All Business

Chris Redfield continues to channel Mad Max, while Sheva prepares to use a machete to cut through red tape in this pair of new costume reveal vids for the Resident Evil 5 Alternative Edition DLC.

These two new costumes are a bit more reserved than the little red riding hood and warrior costumes Capcom previously revealed, though I'm still not buying Chris as some sort of post-apocalyptic bad ***. Sheva, on the other hand, pulls off the businesswoman look with charm and grace. All she needs is a long jacket and her fingernails will shine like justice.

Some New Resident Evil 5 Alternative Edition Screens

Next February (Feb. 18 to be exact!), Capcom is bringing RE5 to the PlayStation 3 in the form of Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition.

The game will take advantage of Sony motion controls as well as include new episodes like "Desperate Escape" in which players control Josh Stone and Jill Valentine in an effort to help Chris Redfield and Sheva.

There are also new costumes for the game's Mercenaries Mode (which is retitled "Mercenaries Reunion" for this versions). Those new costumes include Exoskeleton Chris and Office Lady Sheva.
Dom and Marcus want their armor back:
