I just think the majority of people just want the 20 GB HD included in that $299 package. I mean could care less about the headset or even the wireless controllers. Sure, you can buy a hard drive by itself but it's 99.99 and MS knows that's a ripoff in itself. Hell, you can get flash drives for the same amount of storage for under that price.
What you're basically doing is railroading people into buying the 400 bucks version because the core system doesn't have a harddrive. They know no one would buy the $400 version if you could buy the HDD at a reasonable price, so they upped the HDD price. Whether that was a good idea or not remains to be seen.
