WOW! EG, I thought that you had the "Tank" of 360's never ran hot or no issues, and then it craps out on you.

I was playing Madden last night, and I was getting all kinds of stuttering during the game, than come 3rd quarter the damn thing locks up on me. I shut off the 360, but good thing it came back on when I hit the power button.

I will be amazed if I can make it to the 1 yr anniversary of the 360's release with my original if this crap continues. Shoot, MS should give people something for having a launch console still on MS Anniv.

        LOL!

Yeah, seriously, mine never got hot, I never had a single game lock up or anything. Played flawlessly for 10 months, being played almost every single day. Then I go to turn it on, dead. Very weird. I can say the new one isn't as loud, the power brick is a different shade of grey as well.

EDIT - You edited after I posted.

For the first 90 days, I can take my 360 back over and over again. After that, it's like any store warranty, one return and done. Best Buy just changed their warranties to cover multiple returns. It's $40 for the added year. And yes, I would rather pay $40 a year, than send my 360 back to MS, waiting 2-3 weeks for the process, and then get back a dead 360 as what happened to TJ, then going another 2-3 weeks without. My $40 gets me a new system, new controller, new head set, new everything. Your's gets you someone else's used 360 that has been "fixed". Also, I can keep renewing my warranty buy just getting a new system. I don't believe you can renew the MS warranty. If you can, I apologize in advance.

We'll see how you feel about that say your 360 dies when a big game you want comes out.
I have it planned out if my 360 dies, I'm going to pull a Holic. Go to Best Buy or Gamestop and buy another system with their warranty. Then send out the 360 to MS to fix since I have the warranty and then sell the one I get back from them on ebay. I'm not messing around waiting 2-3 weeks for the console to come back and then possibly have it die out on me again.

I should have bought the Best Buy warranty to begin with.

Mine locked up for the first time since NBA2K6 and MLB2K6 messed it up twice on me last night playing Madden. I hope that it was Madden that did it to me and not the system deciding to clunk out.

            My 360 does get hot.

                Re: Official 360 Problems

I just found this at IGN:

A guy opened up the new 360 he just bought and compared it to the old 360 he had from launch. Can anyone confirm that the HDD has been changed?

                1. The silver parts of the system are now matte grey (not really important, but worth noting)

                2. There are 4 chips on the bottom of the motherboard which now have thermal pads which use the metal case as a heat sink

                3. They don't use the foil under the cpu's heatsink; now its just thermal paste (apparently the foil wasn't worth the $0.00003 savings when it overheats the cpu)

                4. There is now grounding foil from the DVD drive to the metal case

                Launch Mobo:

                New Mobo:
Their placing thermal pads on the chips sets.

                New HDD w/Premium is matted:

That was my first one (launch). It ran pretty smooth, cool anyway. Then it just died, turned it on, froze when the 360 logo was spinning. Then the 3 red lights of death. Atleast it went fast..and peacefully...LOL

                        Interesting.

I kept my HDD, so I can't say anything about it. But the power brick is a different shade of grey, and the controller's back feels different. A little more rough I think.

I wonder if those pads help out the 4 chips.

They very well should as they basically serve the purpose of "heatsinks". I guess Microsoft board level techs probably tested the boards and found that failures were coming from those chips.

They probably saw surface cracks in those chips as well which indicate "excessive heat damage".

By January this overheating issue should be gone hopefully when the new rev. comes out.

Sounds to me like your 360 not getting hot might have been just the opposite of it not overheating. The outer case gets hot as the heat dissipates from the chips. It's a bit of a stretch but it could be that for some reason the heat built up in your system didn't dissipate propery. If the heat doesn't reach the casing then it won't get hot.

Also, I believe you ruled out overheating because you had just turned your system on. That is not quite accurate. Some of our clients have had similar problems with their PCs (them dying when you turn them on) and most of the time when we take out the mother board we can see where it fried and it's clear there was overheating. Sometimes heat just eats away at the circuits slowly and it works like a charm until it won't start up anymore.

Anyways, you got a new system so it's not too bad.
