PS3 Premium/Core Ratio: 80%/20%?
Retailers really want you to get the 60GB model.
by Daemon Hatfield
September 11, 2006 - The PlayStation 3 will be nigh impossible to find when its recently-reduced 400,000 units are launched November 17. But for those lucky 400k people, a choice will have to be made: go with the $600 60GB version complete with HDMI output, or the $500 20GB/no HDMI model? The choice may be made for them, however, as the premium pack might be much (relatively) easier to find than the core pack.
Gamasutra is citing a report filed by Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian predicting the initial PS3 shipments will be 80% $600 versions and 20% $500 versions. IGN contacted Sony, and while the company hasn't announced the official availability of each pack, it confirmed for us that the 80%/20% ratio was the preferred ratio of retailers it has been talking to.
We fed these numbers into IGN's Super Ninja Battle Computer of Number Krunching Death, and it came back with the following breakdown of premium/core packs: if the predicted ratio is true, it will mean 320,000 premium packs available at launch, and 80,000 core packs.
As an interesting footnote to last week's news that Sony was cutting the PS3's shipping numbers by 75% and delaying the launch in Europe, head of all things PlayStation Ken Kutaragi made the following comment to Reuter's: "If you asked me if Sony's strength in hardware was in decline, right now I guess I would have to say that might be true."Comment

You and Stormyhog need to stop bashing polls! As a statistician I am greatly offended!! Just kidding
I can get into the math of a poll (which isn't that complicated) but by far the most difficult thing to get right in a poll is to make sure the poll actually represents the people you are asking. If you only ask 1000 people across a country a question, how on earth can you expect that to represent every state, men vs. women, old vs. new, religious and racially different opinions that exist across a country of 300 million people? That is where a poll fails and pollsters need to use stratified sampling to make sure every major group is represented across the country to ensure accuracy.
For anyone that cares about how polls are calculated, I will give you a quick formula. Anyone else can stop reading if you haven't done so already. Pollsters pick how confident their poll will be. The standard is 95% which is why they almost always say this poll is accurate 19 times out of 20. Given that, here are two things you need: P will represent the answer (ie. 0.40 = 40% like president Bush if you ask people that question) and N will be the number of people in the poll (ie. 2000 people).
The general formula is P and the margin of error is +/- 2*sqrt(P * (1-P)/N). sqrt= square root.
If you asked 1000 people if they were getting a PS3 and 200 said yes, your poll would read as an answer 20% with a margin of error = 2*sqrt(0.20*0.80/1000) = 0.025 or 2.5%.
Therefore a pollster would say the answer was 20% +/- 2.5% and accurate 19 times out of 20.
Edit: I should add that as long as you have at least 1000 people, the margin for error will never be higher than 3% which is why its so important to make sure you ask a truly representative group of people.Last edited by 23; 09-12-2006, 10:43 AM.Comment

"We can confirm that Sonly Online Entertainment is in talks with Viacom and Xfire for a single, specific PS3 game. However, there are no announcements at this time regarding any discussions between SCEA, Viacom and Xfire."This proposed deal is completely separate and independent from the PlayStation Network Platform, and is something that SOE was examining specifically for Dark Kingdom.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Xfire is like the AIM of Gaming I guess. It tells you what computer game you friend is playing (assuming Xfire supports it) and you can send the messages and stuff. I think it also allows you to join the same servers they're playing on and whatnot.Comment

Is there a confirmed launch lineup yet. I have a 1080p TV now so I may have to get oneMuch cheaper than buying an $800 Blue Ray DVD player.
