Let me first start off by saying that this game right here is a system seller. If you're slightly on the fence about this game, get it NOW!!
The graphics are a beast. I thought GRAW was the best looking 360 game to date but this one has it been. You've all seen the vids so imagine that detail an HDTV.....which I dont have and I'm still salivating over the detail. The weapons you use just look great in your hand as the intricate detail is suberb. They really did'nt have to do it. The caves and sewers you first start off in are nothing compared to the lush beauty of when you finnally get outdoors. I came out to a star filled sky at night and quickly after, you started to see the clouds form in the sky as the night turned into day.
The character detail is second to none as when you zoom in to a persons face to talk. Even the Kahjits(cat people) look great with detail. Depending on where you are at, the lights or shadows can do some pretty cool things with ppls faces. In the sunlight, they will look warm and wholesome. In the shadows, they can look downright eerie. The lip syncing is meh..but it is'nt bad by any stretch.
As for gameplay, everything has rerturned from Morrowind except everything has been streamlined and made into seperate gameplay mechanics that Morrowind fans will enjoy as well as new fans to the series. For fighting, its not Soul Calibur but its much better than Morrowind. The block botton ads so much to fighing now as you have to watch for your enemys habits and figure out ways to counter. No more swinging and missing like the last game, every swing will be a hit, the diffrence in Oblivion is that you do less damge in the early stages and the enemies will block occasionally making for some pretty tense moments. As an Archer, if you aim correctly you will score a hit excpet you wont be able to go great distances and you wont give much damage.
The physics are just sick! This goblin came running towards me(after a few long range shots) and I pulled back on my arrow, shot it just as he was about to jump and melee me and the arrow hit right in his mouth for the final death blow. It hit him in the mouth and he must have slid back 10 feet like it was a shotgun blast. It was great. Another goblin came running at me and this time I used my axe and chopped him down, after the last lick, he flew off this platform and into the murkey sewer below. It was great. Cant wait to find out more ways to kill. As for objects and the like, its cool to pick them up, toss them around and do whatever.
Last year, when you did things like mix items together to make potions or use a hammer to repair weapons and armor, you had a chance to fail doing so. Now you're succesfull each time, its just that your potions will be low and have minimal effects and you cant use a hammer 10 times like you could in Morrowind. You use a hammer once to repair armor and weapons and its gone. I have noticed that your weapons and armor deplete much quicker than it did in Morrowind so there will be a time when your weapon will just break leaving you SOL in the middle of a fight. As for the items such as ingredients for mixing potions, you have a chance to fail or succeed when picking flowers and other vegetation. You now have to harvest it. When you're about to mix items, its much easier this year than it was in the last game. When choosing ingredients, it tells you which ones will go together and if nothing goes with an ingredient, there will be no option to pick a second ingredient. If anybody understands that.
Batering is diffrent this time. You cant name your own price like you did in Morrowind. Instead, you can choose to "Haggle" them and it will lower they're percentages for buying and raise your percentages for selling. Haven't messed around with this much so I'm not all clear on it. I haven't used the persuade feature as well so I'm in the dark about that one as well. Picking locks looks to be fun. Its not Splinter Cell but it has its own flavor. I can see myself breaking lots of lockpicks attempting to open more difficult doors in the future. Its easy to get the hang of though.
The beggining level is great for noobs and novices of the game to get accustomed to the controls, fighting and other features. In Morrowind, you got your diections and it was off you go into the world. In Oblivion, you start off in a linear type dungeon and you will find just about everything you need. You'll find a sword, axe, bow and arrows, shield, potions, magic scrolls, mortar and pedestal(for mixing items) and a ton of lockpicks. The enemys are fairly easy to start off with and are there to use to fighting.
BUT...when you finnally make it out of the sewers, you'll get that nice overwhelming feeling you got when you first started off in Morrowind. Where the **** do I go? Where am I? What was I sopposed to do? The place is vast and huge and being just a small spec on that huge map is just crazy. The size looks muh bigger than Morrowind so good luck finding your way around.
As I mentioned before, I'm gonna neglect the quick warp feature. I think its weak sauce. Its strickly there for ppl who want to run through the game as fast as possible IMO. This game was meant to be explored. You never know what you'll run into in the terrain. Enemies, caves, side quest and beautiful scenery. And believe me, the scenery is quite breathtaking.
If you neglect warping to the first place you have to go for your quest, you'll end up in Imperial City. Full of shops this place is a good start to begin your journey. Sell some items, buy some equipment, talk with the townsfolk, hear the rumors and there are academys and other districts I have yet to explore. I plan on leaving there with a few side quest I tell you that much.
The compass is'nt as bad as I initially though. I thought there would be some arrow pointing you in the direction you had to go like GRAW. Instead, you have a marker set in the direction you have to go and its just there so you can head in that general direction. In Morrowind, this was done by looking at the map, checking to see if you're heading in the right direction......walk about 50 yards, check map again....walk 50 more yards, check map again to see if you're close....."dammit, I'm off course"! In Oblivion, all the compass does is eliminate that so I will find it usefull.
Well, thats about it, if any questions I'll be next to my PC all day today. As you guessed, I called off. (Dont tell me boss)
