Impossible to answer. You're looking at it with much too narrow a perspective.

Ask this? How many people are there in life? Limitless.

You can choose from something like 9 races, they're the same ones that have been in all the games (and yes, I know you don't know that). You have Imperials, Redguards, High Elves, Dark Elves, Wood Elves, Orcs, Khajiiit (cat people), I forget the name for the lizard people, Nords (Vikings) etc. Each race has benefits in some ways. Nords have a spell that lets them run around without armor, since it gives them natural armor. Orcs get bonuses to Axes, Redguards are flat out badasses with a blade, etc.

When you go to "choose", you customize everything with their look with sliders, much like a Fight Night CAB. You then choose one of something like 25 or 30 "classes"...Assassin, Knight, Warrior, Mage, etc. But if you don't find something that you like there, mix and match skills to make your ultimate character. If you want a plate mail-wearing, fireball-shooting, lockpicking, sneaking, healing, leaping asskicker, you can do that. Just choose the skills that you want to use, and ignore everything else. You level up by using your skills, not by getting experience points per se, so it's a drastically different experience.

Choosing a character is as limitless as you can imagine. Race and skill combinations are more than likely literally in the hundreds of thousands.

The great thing is the races aren't locked into certain classes. I like to play as a Nord, but can choose to be a thief or mage if I want. Obviously, they're slanted more towards combat and it might take a little work, for example, to become as good of an archer as a wood elf, but I can still do it.

Only buy and sell for the most part. Although if you sell stuff, it takes away from anything that you're buying, so it's essentially trading. I've traded in an iron longsword for a steel longsword and only had to pay a little in the transaction. Still buying and selling but you're only physically seeing a couple gold pieces leave your inventory when you "trade in".

Thanks it was confusing me a little last night. And the persuade system too. There are a lot of shops just in the imperial city, it's a medival 5th Avenue.

You level up during gameplay, but it doesn't take effect until you sleep.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Impressions Thread

So, I just created a new character. My first was a mage because I didn't really want to go hack-n-slashing through the game but I quickly found out that I was only interested in the more destructive magical abilities so the alchemy type stuff was a waste that was slowing down my level-up progress. Now I'm a dark elf with a created class based on magic that focuses on destructive magic and stealth. Much cooler and much more fun.

As for the quests, I keep getting sidetracked everywhere because it seems like everywhere I go there is something else to do that interests me. The map looks like it has a bunch of stuff on it and then some open areas but what I found quickly was that all of the open areas are filled with things to explore. Just cutting through the woods between a couple of towns I ran into a small village, some ruins, and some wandering bandits. And that was going on a relatively straight line. I sense that this game is going to eat up quite a bit of free time in the near future...

Re: Official Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Impressions Thread

Why why why did I stop off at Comp USA yesterday? I could have easily gone a different route on the way home from work and been home faster. Nevertheless, I stopped off and on a whim picked up Oblivion. For $45, it seemed like a no brainer. If I traded it back in after a couple weeks, I'd still probably get $30 back in credit.

As stated before, I've really never played an RPG game before. GTA doesn't count. This game hooked me from the very beginning. I've been so impressed with the little time that I have played it thus far. Heck, it took me a good hour and half to get out of the dungeon/sewars. I was collecting everything at first, until I realized I didn't need to be taking skulls, bones, and rat meat every chance I could. I was just having a great time exploring.

When I finally arose from the sewars, it was night time. But, wow is this world massive! In every direction I looked, it seemed like the land went on for miles and miles. I made a mistake more than a few times by crossing the water to be confronted by a pissed off woman and a friend with a bow and arrow. I could kill the woman fairly easy, but the dude with the bow kept killing me. I finally figured out that hey, this is my world and I can go and do whatever I want so I bypassed these individuals and started exploring the countryside. I too made the mistake of going back underground and am now in some sort of dungeon or cave. I've discovered quite a bit on my exploration, but I'd like to get back out to the country. Hopefully, tonight I'll find my way out.

By the way, I love activating those logs and crushing the goblins.

The rats are freaking ugly and huge.

Man, I need a torch when I go down in to the caves or dungeons. It's so dark down there stumbling around without light.

Is anyone using the hot keys? I haven't yet, and it seems to take me a while to find out what I want to equip myself with, etc.

For a novice RPG gamer such as myself, I like they added the "eye" so you can tell if someone has spotted you.

Just chatting it up with the guards and picking which question or statement to use is very cool. I guess this goes hand in hand with RPGs. Can't wait to get in to town.

Is it bad I was having little dreams about this game last night? This is how much this game has captivated me. I'm just extremely impressed.

Thus far, I feel like I've gotten my money's worth from the 360. There are just so many quality games and this very well could be my favorite so far!

I'm gonna have to create a new character as an assassin and just go crazy...my thief will kill when necessary, but Terry's taking it to a new level. Just the fact you have these choices is amazing.

I forgot I've got a house of a guy I killed I can use as my base, that'll make life easier.

yes, the hotkeys are fantastic. I love being able to switch between my sword and bow with just the press of a button.

I think I'm going to start over and create a save right at the end of the dungeon so I can play around with some different characters.

My main character will always be a Nord though. He is a warrior who is good with all types of weapons and armors. He's generally a nice guy but has a bit of a drinking problem and has a tendency to lose his temper while under the influence.

Anyone try out using the warhammer? It takes so long to actually swing it, but man does it land quite the blow.

that's what i'm gonna do too, so I have that save forever....I've always liked the more laid back thief type, and I picked Khajit cause i thought they looked pretty cool. I'll have to try the warhammer, i've just been using 1 handed blades/shield or a bow/arrow.

That's exactly what makes it so great. And the use of Darkness (I think Bacardi pointed this out to me) is fantastic. They make it REALLLLY dark. If you don't use the torch, you have a problem. My solution was just to learn the Night Eye spell and use Medeival Night Vision (as dorky as that sounds). For a stealth class, seeing in the dark is essential.

50 people can play this game, and all tell their tales...and it would sound like 50 different games.
