Re: Gears of War preview
I'm thinking I'll have it today. when I went in on Saturday and traded in all my old stuff, as he was putting my preorder in the system, I asked him if he would have it Tuesday and before I could finish the sentence, he said oh yeah, we'll have it. So we'll see. Never can trust those dingy video game store clerks.PS4: aBayBates

Re: Gears of War preview
I'll have it today or better. They have told me they are driving down to pick up the game from their distribution center and should have them back in Waco around 6 or 7.
I read the reviews and everything sounds great, but reading more about the game modes, my excitement came down a bit. I still can't wait, but COD 3 might end up getting more playing time as far as replay value goes.
From the 1up review...
Compare this to Halo 2 with its 5 katrillion possible custom combinations of multiplayer modes, and you can already tell that Gears of War won't have the same longevity. It also doesn't help that the matchmaking system is broken.
That has me scratching my head.Comment

Gears of War Discourages Ranked Team Play
Microsoft certification stands in the way of logic.
There's been some confusion about Epic's Gears of War and online multiplayer. Will players be able to play ranked games online in pre-made teams? Or will they enter ranked games without their regular playing partners?
We spoke with Gears of War's Cliff Bleszinski to clarify exactly what's going on with Gears' multiplayer:
It's "ranked" meaning that when you are joining a ranked match you are being shown games that are determined to be at the same level as you are by the Xbox Live arbitration system and TrueSkill.
You cannot join with your friends as that would throw the system off given they are likely to be at different ranks and also makes it easier to cheat. So when you search for ranked match you only see games that are playing at your level.
It's required by Microsoft to be this way.
What about unranked games? Will you and three buddies be able to select from playlists or hosted games and join a room for four on four action? We hope so.
Players won't be able to create a squad and go from ranked game to ranked game -- like the matchmaking system Bungie created with Halo 2. Instead, it sounds like players will be ranked individually and then randomly put with players of similar skill levels.
It's frustrating that a team-based multiplayer game like Gears of War seems to be getting squeezed by Microsoft's certification system. Maybe later on, a mode that will allow teams to compete will be added in to Epic's gritty shooter -- considering Microsoft's recent history with micropayments, will it be something we have to pay for?Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Re: Gears of War Discussion Thread
I really wish Douglas Perry reviewed this at IGN. He is now my best source for reviews, very thorough.
I like the "next-gen" standard everyone is claiming Gears has set. Although, from what I've read, gameplay doesn't make a huge leap. I think that's where the challenge will eventually be, to make gameplay more unique and satisfying.
I keep reading about how nice the sound is. I'm looking forward to that.Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.Comment
