Re: Nintendo Wii Information, hardware, games discussion

Assuming I actually do get one (still on the fence due to lack of playing time), I'd be looking at Red Steel, Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Rogue Squadron a possible StarFox (how INCREDIBLE would StarFox be on the Wii?).

I'd also kill for a new Castlevania, but I doubt that'd happen.

While I think that the gameplay is the most important thing, why does Nintendo refuse to go HD with the Wii? Doesn't it seem they are a step behind?

Keep the costs down and also because a larger % of their customers wouldn't have a HD display.

They have aknowledged HD and pretty much said that their console afer the Wii will be HD.

that will probably be 5 years from now. They could have included HD without raising costs(see, XBOX). Essentially they are selling an XBOX with a fancy controller without HD? Is that about right?

I am not saying that this thing will not be good or even great, but I can't see the reasoning for no HD. It's like not having online with the cube. Makes little sense to me.

With that said, I am sure I will buy one.

Re: Nintendo Wii Information, hardware, games discussion

Why is it like 'an Xbox with a fancy controller' ?

Games aren't... well shouldn't, be judged on graphics alone. With that said though, I'm sure there will be many dud games just developed as quick as possible with nothing new or different whatsover and just relying on the control system. But like the DS, there will certainly be the standout games that make the console a big success. Certain gamers though, especially the so called hardcore lot, have to accept what the Wii is and why Nintendo have gone this way and either enjoy it or move on because there's no need for whinging about the graphics.

Too many games on 360 (and I imagine the PS3 will be the same) have just flicked the high res switch on and called it a new game. No new idea's, no new gameplay and on the graphics side of things, not that much of a leap in poly counts either. Just higher resolutions. And companies are taking advantage of the default, nice look of it and slacking off in the rest of the graphic areas. Look at NBA 2K7, crisp high res but with strange poly models, crap lighting and colour and laughable face textures. Games like Call Of Duty are still using the Quake 3 engine for goodness sake.

Which reminds me of Call of Duty 3 on Wii. Exact same game as the 360 as far as the game and levels etc. Now on the 360 you have better graphics. On the Wii you get to actually motion to throw grenades, plant mines, direct your troops, push and shove in close range knife battles etc... I like the look of high resolution graphics but I'd certainly take the Wii version first.

It's funny, people flock to something new and shiny but so many gamers running for info on the Wii are shocked and can't understand why the graphics are the same as the current gen we all know.

Having played a handful of games on the Wii from Zelda to Rayman, Wii Sports, Wii Play and Wario I can say I am in love with it already and can see it being a huge success. And for someone who has a 360 and a High definition tv with it, I didn't mind the graphics on the Wii at all and they certainly didn't look too far behind or ruin the experience in any way.

Where did you get that info on COD3 being different than the 360 version. Other than graphics they will be the same from what I have read. In the 360 version you can do all of those things that you said.

My one thing on the graphics.

Look at the DS, it's no where near the power of the PSP, but the DS is DOMINATING the PSP. I play my DS pretty much nightly.... The Wii will be the same.

He said it's the exact same thing, re-read.

The only difference is online play.

I don't know anything about hand held games, but I would think the DS doing well has a lot to do with children and the cheaper price. Console gaming is a whole different animal than handhelds, right?

Price, I give you is a factor. But I owned both, the DS dominated my play time so I sold my PSP. And the DS games aren't about graphics, they are gameplay, just as the Wii will be.

Children are always going to be a factor for Nintendo, they know their fanbase.

It's the reverse of the PS1 and N64 where the PSX dominated the N64. I agree that with the DS it's all about the games and the DS has that nailed down. If Nintendo can get continued 3rd Party support for their new machine and if Nintendo can keep a steady supply of First Party games then it will be tough going up against them.

I'll probably buy a system when Mario Galaxy comes out, which Nintendo has hinted sometime in 07.

Price and kids have much to do with it, no doubt. But the DS is DESTROYING the PSP with older gamers and female gamers, especially those who never have participated in the hobby.

Games like Brain Age, Clubhouse Games, True Swing Golf, Nintendogs, Big Brain Academy, Tetris and Sudoku are helping to lead the DS sales avalanche. They're all part of the "Touch Generations" series of games by Nintendo, the first time I can ever recall a gaming company designing a line of games for older gamers.

I'm a 41-year-old veteran gamer, and I can tell you the "Touch Generations" series has me hooked on the DS Lite, line and sinker. I can't stop playing Clubhouse Games.

                            Take care,

You should see the look on the parents' faces when they come in to pre-order a Wii (I'm now currently in retail) for their kids and are explained exactly what it is and does. They are genuinely excited about trying it.

Same with some of the older staff I work with, 40 years and older considering playing videogames for the first time. Geez, even at the Wii media night they were loving Wii Sports Bowling, Tennis and Wii Play Snooker and Duck Hunt Shooting. Absolutely loving it!

I think people will fall in love with Nintendo all over again like the NES days. I haven't played the system yet, but the Wii offers simple graphics but everything that I have read is all about the gameplay which is what I want.
