Re: Nintendo Wii Information, hardware, games discussion

I just got home from a Nintendo night here (luck of the job, now working in retail. First a 360 night with GOW, now Wii...) and to play the Wii and a bunch of games for the first time was amazing!

    Zelda is brilliant!
Graphics look great, controlling link with the left nunchuck is smooth and swiping the sword with the wiimote is cool. I was worried because at first, I was all over the place trying to aim the bow and arrow but after 5 minutes it was so natural. Got to try fishing which was fun and play through a dungeon and work my way to a big fire boss. This will get straight A's in reviews and be rated an instant classic for sure.

    Wii Sports - Tennis.
    I loved it!
The controls are amazing! One would think it would just be, swipe left, swipe right etc for basic shot but it reacts to all movements of the wiimote.
I was swiping the wiimote as if hitting over the ball and to the left and was hitting forehands across court with top spin and it reacts to how quickly you swing too. Same with hitting under the ball etc for slices. So much fun!

    Wii Sports - Bowling
    Again, loved it!
So real, so interactive, so fun!
Like tennis it reacts to the way you swing the wiimote so you can put spin on the ball etc or fire it fast and straight. Brilliant!

    Wii Play - Snooker/Pool
Surprisingly fun! Solid graphics from top down or 3D table view. You choose where you want to aim, select the point of contact on the ball and then pull the wiimote back and push forward to shoot, just like real life.
Slower paced but still very fun.

Wii Play - Shooting (Duck Hunt etc)
Simple but great fun. Nice clean, solid graphics and the aiming was easy and gameplay addictive.
Wii Play has 9 games and another Wii Remote so I'll be grabbing it.

    Rayman
Tried 2 mini games, bloody awesome fun!!
A quick mine cart game where you had to pump the cart back and forth to build up speed and fire the rabbit off the cart. The winner is the one who throws the rabbit the furthest, hehe! You control this like playing the drums in fast forward basically. Left Nunchuck and right Wiimote drumming up and down where the faster you go send the cart faster along and throws the rabbit further.

Also a game where you are spraying the rabbits (with carrot juice maybe). You shake the can with your left (nunchuck) and use the Wiimote as a pointer, hose type thing to aim and spray them. Great party game!

    Wario Ware
Best way to see all the things the Wii Remote and Nunchuck can do.
Many crazy mini games that were all different and all a lot of fun!

I was expecting the Wii to be fun but this has exceeded those expectations.
I am in love with games again!!

Hey Admiral...great impressions man. Really appreciated! The Wii might also be the spark I need in terms of gaming.

Just wondering how you would rate the graphics overall (specifically Zelda I guess). Was it a really good looking xbox game? Maybe a bit beyond?

          Admiral, nice impressions.

It sounds like the Wii will offer something new and unique all around this generation. There are way too many 1/2*** games on the 360 and only see the same for the PS3. It's like developers are either getting too lazy or their plan is to offer something called "CONSUMABLES" where they don't place all the content in a game they would last gen and charge for it at the launch of the game for an insane price, like EA did today with NFS:Carbon.

I think the Wii will bring back many gamers as Nintendo is more focused on having a gaming machine. Not that my beloved 360 isn't a gaming machine, but the Marketplace Consumables and 1/2*** games are ruining gaming for many. Wait till the PS3 arrives, just the rumors that have been circulating with the next Gran Turismo where you will have to spend tons of money to buy tracks and cars. I wish I knew where console gaming was heading.

Into oblivion at that rate candy. With the influx of broken games being released, along with rehashes galore, and now charging people for things that should've been in the game already, they just aren't making things attractive enough.

The games are already more expensive. I cant say I didnt expect a company like EA to try to exploit money in the marketplace, but in the end i think its something too many people wont be willing to pay for.

Im definitely looking to get a Wii for me and my kids to enjoy just like the DS.

These "consumables" via xbx live are just driving me nuts. EA is the one to really take advantage of people here, just annoying.

There are too many unfinished or bug ridden games. My last hope comes next week for next gen with GEARS OF WAR, if this game is messed up in anyway than I'm at a loss for words.

Even if I were to get a Wii for the new gameplay elements, I know I can also fall back on the classics from the VC.

We know you're buying a Wii, you just haven't posted it yet.

I'd like one, but I might not be getting one for a few months. Maybe now that I just got a new position at wk, I should treat myself.

Re: Nintendo Wii Information, hardware, games discussion

Right now I have to say the graphics are at Gamecube quality overall.

The Wii Sports games are pretty basic, but they are crisp, solid and move smoothly.

Rayman looked nice but definitely had no AA, there were visible jaggies everywhere, but I guess I notice them more since I play my 360 in Hi-Def...
The polys were solid, textures crisp but not so detailed and the frame rate smooth.

Wario Ware was probably the best looking game in general. The basic graphics throughout each mini game are solid, colourful and very crisp and clean. Still GC quality I guess, but just flawless in execution.

Zelda... like an updated version of the N64 OOT game. The models look good, especially Link and the fire boss. The frame rate is smooth and while the textures are of a lower quality than the next gen games we know, they still look good.
There's some really nice effects on the fire boss. Stuff I don't think we would have seen on Gamecube and the lighting from the afternoon sun in the cutsenes (never seen before footage shown when the demo goes unplayed/untouched for a few minutes) of Link riding his horse through the open mainland looks very nice.

So for 360 owners who are now used to the high definition, the first thing you'll think when seeing the Wii games is that it's low res, low quality textures and jaggies. Pretty much Gamecube quality with a little polish here and there.

But after about 30 minutes trying the various games, I no longer noticed the resolution and enjoyed the huge amount of fun I was having. (Along with the dreams I was having of party nights and family gatherings with the Wii, being the best fun in years.)

I think at the resolution it is at, the developers should really try to squeeze some anti-aliasing out of it but other than that I was impressed with the solid, smooth look of the visuals. GC 1.5 maybe.

Will any Wii games support Widescreen or is it all 4:3?

I'm not concerned about the graphics (I have a 360 to fill the next-gen graphics niche), but widescreen would be cool.

                        99% of them are 16:9 and 480p

Nice. I'm so used to 16:9 now it would be weird going back to 4:3.

This is crazy, the more I see Wii related game footage and demos the more I want this system.

                              ARGH! Damn Nintendo.

It was Christmas 1986 that we got the NES as a present from my parents and I guess 20 years later I could be buying the Wii.

And let Scott tell me I told you so.
