I think that were talking about 2 different things on variations and versions. I think that Sony will try to corner this console market by offering different variations of the PS3 like a PC. By the end of next year (2007), there might be 3-4 different PS3 consoles out there that are running the same hardware, but they all may have different features. There might be a console at say, $399, $499, $599, or $699. Each one is going to have more to offer than the other.

Isn't it funny Sony ripped microsoft for 2 SKU's and now they roll out this. Instead of being a forerunning company of innovation sony is all over the map.

I agree with what Candyman, that if Sony does this right, it could change the way consoles are done.

I think sony has screwed itself completely with the handling of PS3. The 10 million unit headstart that the 360 will have, will cause the hold out 3rd party developers to jump to the microsoft. Companies like Square Enix and Konami can not economically pass up making their AAA titles for the largest consumer console demographic.

Give me a title other then Resistence that Sony had at E3 that made you think that the PS3 was marginally better then the 360.

I never said that the PS3 was better than the 360. All I stated was that I think that if what Sony is doing on the different versions is successful, then we might see Microsoft and Nintendo do this the next time around with console launches.

I am not getting into another 360 vs PS3 post war, there are too many as there is and its nonsense. Everyone has their opinions and everyone is entitled to them. Lets leave it at that.

CB I don't understand something you said. Microsoft did offer two different versions at launch and it was Sony who copied Microsoft's idea. In fact I like Microsoft's idea better because at least the core can be upgraded to a Premium system not like the two PS3 versions.

The only thing with the PS3 that wont surely be upgradable is the HDMI. The only need for HDMI will be in 2010 when BluRay movies are hardlocked to require it. Component cables can play games on 1080p and will be able to play movies on 1080p up until 2010.

It has been mentioned by one of the Sony head honchos that you'll be able to use any USB flashmedia drive with it and has also been mentioned that a PS3 USB wifi will be available in the future (that is if you arent able to use an off-the-shelf version).

HDDs will be upgradable with any off-the-shelf ATA hard drive, rumored to be limited at 120GB currently but they are working to overcome that.

Again, HDMI is the only thing that isnt 100% sure that it will be upgradable to, but since MS is working on an HDMI add-on for their machine, I imagine one for the PS3 will be available down the road as well.

standard with both systems, at least both are capable of them standard. Its not clear whether either will or will not ship with a wireless controller but it will work with either if you have to purchase them separately.

Has Sony even confirmed they are releasing a wired controller? Every controller comes with a detachable USB cable that plugs into the PS3 for charging and play. I'm not sure if they have announced one where the cable isn't removable.

havent heard but its unlikely at this point that they'll talk much about that since they want to pimp their wireless controllers. I could easily see at launch that they only sell the wireless controller (or wired if plugged up with usb) since that would be an all in one. Eventually down the road though, people will want to pay less for their controller and thus either Sony will or a 3rd party will release a non-wireless USB controller.

I believe they said all controllers are wireless but you have the option to have it wired with the USB Cable charger/play thing.

The different versions that I am speaking of are not the 20GB and 60GB at launch but rather the different versions that Sony may come out with during the PS3 life cycle. (The above link will show what in the heck I am talking about)

To be honest with you, I am still on the fence about how I feel about the two different launch versions of the PS3. If its like Microsoft, who pulled the 2 sku approach off beautifully, then I will have no problems. If not, then I will have to see exactly what the differences are before making judgment. I think at the TGS, we'll have more information and more concrete information as to just what the major differences are under the hood of the two PS3 versions.

And Rodster, I appreciate the kind words. I admit for everyone to read that I am a Sony fan. But I am not so blind by Sony that I can't see the forrest for the trees. I think that Microsoft has done a hell of a job with their consoles. Especially with the 360. I just prefer Sony's first party games to Microsoft I guess. I love SOCOM and Metal Gear. Thats not to say that in the back of my mind, I am not thinking of getting a 360. Its hard seeing the "second" round of games on the 360 and not find myself giddy.
