I agree with you. Which makes me believe those Euro price leaks a month back or so were on purpose. Get the shock of the price out of the way for the fans, and then when they announce the price of $500 and $600, it's no longer a shock since you anticipated it from the beginning.Originally posted by countryboy

But we also live in a country where gas prices are through the roof and people are beginning to watch the wallets. I think the PS3 will sell out initially but can it sustain? Also I believe it would be a good idea for Sony to drop the price next year when Blue-Ray is more established and maybe things have rebounded a bit.Originally posted by countryboyAnd I agree with you 100%

I really don't like that $600 price and the lack of HDMI on the $500 seems bogus to me. Has Sony announced any kind of launch lineup or huge launch titles?DON'T PANICComment

Launch lineups are ways away. I'm as big a supporter of the 360 there is, but to be fair, they didn't finalize their launch lineup till November.Originally posted by SpongedaddyBut we also live in a country where gas prices are through the roof and people are beginning to watch the wallets. Re: ***The All Sony PS3 Price and Features Thread***
PS3 crossbar media and features, similar to PSP.
here's the video
Starting from the top (as usual, things I write, or think what they mean in context is in square brackets)
The PLAYSTATION 3 menu system has been confirmed. Just as you can see, it uses the Cross Media Bar system [I believe you call this the XMB?] that is also used in the PSP and PSX. In effect, the system that game fans have become very familiar with has been included.
The PLAYSTATION 3 menu is separated into 8 large categories, "User"、"Setting"、"Photo"、"Music"、"Movie"、"Game "、"N etwork"、"Friend", all of which will be described below.
User: For instance, if a family consisting of Father, Mother, yourself and your little bother were to use the PLAYSTATION 3, it is possible to have different settings per user. (For example, your own menu could have a lot of game contents, you father's could have a lot of pictures, your mom's could have a lot of music contents, etc)
Setting : Language and various other settings. For example, keyboard and mouse adjustments can be made here.
Photo : This is where you can look at photos from your digital camera. You can also easily create slideshows. The PLAYSTATION 3 allows the insertion of so many different formats of memory cards, such as SD card, memory stick, compact flash, so there is a lot of support for different media types. [As a result] It is likely that there are no restrictions on what kind of digital camera is supported.
Music : Music playback is done here. CD support is obviously included. Since MP3 playback is supported, if you store music on the harddrive, you can playback music [from here...but they did not say exclusively from here]whenever you want.
Movie : Here you playback the beautiful images from your Blu-Ray discs. Although in the demonstration at E3, when you put the BluRay disc in, playback begins [automatically], the official explained that storing the movie onto the harddrive is also possible.
Game : The place for game save management.
Network : A browser is included so internet browsing is very easy [I presume this is because of the keyboard support ]
Friend : This is where you exchange [and interact] with friends. If you have registered a friend, you can check if he/she is online from here. An official has explained that if you have a keyboard, you can use it to chat....but we want details !Last edited by backbreaker; 05-11-2006, 11:26 AM.Comment

The PS3 will sellout here in the US on launch if not a few days after. PEople are nuts if they think it won't sell.Originally posted by ExtremeGamerI agree with you. This is where I think they may lose this system war, especially if the Wii comes in at $199-$249. People can pickup the 360 and Wii for about the same price.

Nothing yet.Originally posted by USF11Anyone have any preorder info on the PS3 yet?
USF, I called the EB's and Gamestop's here in Chicago near me and they just took my name down a few days ago to call for when preorders start.
I am going to put my money down just to reserve one. I may see some games by the fall that are looking good and decide to get one. I'm comvering all my bases.

My sources within Gamestop are telling me that it might $100 deposit + preorder 2 games by putting $5 down for each game.Last edited by CaptainZombie; 05-11-2006, 11:45 AM.Comment

Last I hear from my EBgames in the chicago subs was there would be no pre-ordering because of people getting screwed on the 360 pre-orders. But that wasnt set in stone.Originally posted by candyman56Nothing yet.

You are getting good value for the $600 in that it has the Blue Ray technology. I myself justified the expensive price for the PS2 at launch due to the fact that it was a DVD player. However, I didn't need to buy a new TV to use the DVD functionality. Furthermore, Blue Ray may not even be the successfull new format for HD movies which is very scary for Sony if that fails.Originally posted by countryboyLook we live in a country where the attitude of the general consumer is bigger is better. While the price of the hardware will come down in price after a one or two years, the battle between consoles is usually won early and not later in the typical 5-6 year cycle. The fact that Sony is using a 10 year plan for the PS3 shows they have tremendous confidence in surviving the crucial early stage of the battle with MS. Its also very risky to plan long term for a video game system when their life span is usually short. With MS providing a HD add on in the future (add-ons usually suck, 989 doesn't even recognize the HDD for PS2) it adds more risk to the whole thing.
Lastly, Sony is banking on the fact that people want a multi-purpose system while I think MS and Sony need to get back to just creating a gaming system without all the expensive frills. Just my opinion but I can't come close to affording the PS3 and will probably pick up the 360 when the first price drop comes.Comment

I understand about the price of gas, but I really don't think that its slowed people down that have the money already from buying expensive luxury items. The PS3 won't come out until November, therefore people can now save up money to purchase one.
As for launch titles, the only ones that I know of that have been relayed to me as being "launch titles" are Madden '07, Warhawk, and a new SOCOM game to show off Sony's new online service. Nothing is sit in stone.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I agree with everything you said. However, HDTV's have almost become the "norm" now. Most people when shopping for a new television will choose one that has HD because of the quality. HDTV's also aren't that expensive unless you totally go over the top.Originally posted by rudyjuly2You are getting good value for the $600 in that it has the Blue Ray technology. If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: ***The All Sony PS3 Price and Features Thread***
HDTV's are far from the "norm". It is not like people buy a new TV every year so even though electronics stores focus has switched over to HD, it will take several more years before HD has even an equal market share as SD in most homes.
I have an HD set, an old one that I purchased 5 years ago, I am considered an early adopter. Even though my set is 5 years old and considered old tech (can't do 720p), I have no intention of replacing it any time soon. So any SD set bought for a home in the last 5 years probably won't be replaced anytime soon either.
Whether you want to believe it or not, the PS3's price point will hurt it as much as the PSP's price point for a handheld has hurt it. Probably even more so since when I bought my PSP, I did not feel that the DS was a viable competitor for what I wanted in a handheld, where I do see the 360 as a very passable, if not even preferable alternative to the PS3. I have all but made up my mind to get a 360 now that I have seen what Sony is doing, the only thing outstanding is the interesting Wii and its price point. The PS3 is off my wish list likely until 2008 or 2009 when its price point will come into my range.
I would even like the 360 to see a price drop before I jump in, because I think $400 is pushing it for a video game machine. But with how high Sony has priced itself, MS won't have any need to drop the 360's price this Xmas, no need at all.Comment
