    PlayStation 3 - 60G HDD Console - $599.99
    + Game - $59.99
    + Extra Controller - $49.99
    + Sales Tax
    =
    $764.99 U.S.

You have to be kidding me.

I'll need over 800 dollars canadian to do this. I just bought an xbox 360 and am loving it. I dont know what sony is thinking here. Seriously, is anyone here still considering it over the xbox360?

I am still more likely to purchase a PS3 over a 360 because right now the software on the 360 does nothing for me. I like the Sony exclusives so part of me wants a PS3. Until Microsoft's first party developers show me they can make more than a flashy FPS, I won't have much interest in their product (having the backing of Square, the MGS franchise, and a few others would help too). With that said, I really have no plans to purchase a PS3 this year or next. At 5-600 bucks, Sony has to prove to me this console is worth it and will last for awhile. If I buy a new console this year it will be a Wii.

I think MS is offering it as an alternative since the PS3 would be out there with BRD. This way you give consumers the option of adding it on if they choose. I don't think it's intended for playing games - and really, is there a NEED right now for the space BRD and HD-DVD allow right now? Maybe years down the line, yes - but right now I don't think so. I thought MS not going with HD-DVD in the 360 was a big mistake, but now it makes sense if it was going to price the console the way the PS3 is priced.

I agree MS doesn't have anything close to the 1st/3rd party support the PS3 has going for it; they really need to address that situation. But for the price the PS3 is going for, I don't think they showed games that justify the costs. If I'm a tech-head with a $4k HDTV and a $800 surround sound system then the PS3 is reasonably priced; perhaps even a bargain. But most people don't have anywhere near that setup, and likely won't for years to come (many years). I'm not THAT hyped to play MGS4 or FF13. It'll be interesting to see if this drives more 3rd party devs to the 360.

As far as the lack of a rumble feature goes, I think it'll be big. Hideo Kojima has always done something special with the rumble and integrated it into MGS; I'm sure he could do the same with the tilt technology. But I think the feeling you get from force feedback is a little more viceral than what you would get from the PS3's tilt controller. You think of playing Madden, and you feel the rumble when you make a hit - when it's toggled off it's pretty noticeable.

As has been stated many times on this board, the price isn't going to be that big of a deterrent for the hard core gamers who really want a PS3, especially older gamers who have a job.

However, where the price really will hurt them is going to be the younger gaming crowd. I just can't imagine that middle class families are going to be buying something this expensive for their kids. It's also going to be a struggle for college age kids too to afford one. That's a big chunk of your gaming audience there.

Imagine being a 14 year old kid....you probably don't have the cash for it yourself, now try convincing your parents to plunk down $700 for the core PS3, an extra controller, and a couple of games. My parents would have laughed in my face, and my parents are both white collar professionals who would have been able to afford that pretty easily. Even if you can pitch in say $200, you're still asking them for $500........

Even then it is insanse. I love playing games, i love reading about em everyday, and i have a job that pays me pretty well, but I cannot imagine in my lifetime playing upwards of 800 dollars for a console and a few games, especially since all i play is sports games. It doesnt make since for a sports fan who has a 360 go out and buy a ps3, as the games are going to just be ported from one to the other. Does sony really expect people to pay this kinda of tag for a console?

Now, if they come out and say Winning Eleven is now only on the ps3, then i would buy one

I strongly agree. Unless Sony slashes the price of the PS3 after only a month or two on the market (not likely), I'm not going to plunk down that kind of money on a console, and neither will any of my friends. It's just too much.

It'll be interesting to see how all this plays out. It's not looking too good for Sony right now, though. Weak showing at E3, overpriced console, and perhaps a failing format in BluRay.

Well I guess it's the perfect time for me to be "getting older" and out of my videogame phase. I have The Show, and I'm getting MVP '05 on the PC and hopefully those two games will keep me satisfied for a very long time because there is no way in hell I'm dropping $600+ on a videogame system.

Hell, I could win the lottery and think of better things to spend $600 on.

Quick stupid question. The $499 version does not have Wifi capabilities. Does this mean no wifi controllers?!?! If that's the case, I might have to seriously reconsider...

The controllers are still wireless for the 499 version.

sony not settling the lawsuit like microsoft is a huge loss for them, sports games are going to be hurt by lack of vibration on the ps3. also sony pushing their 'blue ray' is crap since its raising the price so much. strop trying to sell the meida trojan horse and sell me an affordable, durable gaming machine. if xbox360 makes it through to november without any major problems (disc load error, etc.), a may have to reconsider.

wifi is for wireless networking, bluetooth is for the wireless controllers.

I saw the pics of both versions and the biggest thing to me was in small print "product subject to change without notice" so with that said, their is more news to come and the Tokyo Game Show is where you will get all of the finalized information. People harp about the price, but they pretty much even one another out. PS3 online is free(for how long don't know) so if you spend your annual fees on X360 you will eventually pass the price of the PS3.
