    PS3 Too Cheap -- Kutaragi

    E3 2006: PS3 Too Cheap -- Kutaragi

I just had to post this. How does he explain his rationalization? Look, I would love to pay for the PS3 but don't give me this rubbish.

    http://ps3.ign.com/articles/706/706133p1.html [more coverage]

This is the PS3 price. Expensive, cheap -- we don't want you to think of it in terms of game machines. Because the PS3 is like nothing else.

For instance, is it not nonsense to compare the charge for dinner at the company cafeteria with dinner at a fine restaurant? It's a question of what you can do with that game machine. If you can have an amazing experience, we believe price is not a problem.

When we announced the PlayStation price, it was said to be expensive. Same for the PlayStation 2. However, when released, both had sales that were unthinkable for previous game machines. This is because both offered experiences that could not be had on previous game machines.

With the PS3, you can have next generation game experiences that could previously not be experienced -- things like next generation graphics and various services via the network. And, as with the PS and PS2, we believe people who like games will, without question, purchase it.

And you have Moore take shots at this.

Still not changing my opinion despite what kind of environment the forums I post in are.

So far, the Sony diehards I spoke to about this didnt look happy at all about the price tag. One told me he'll get a 360 specifically because thats just too much for a console. I agree with him

In the end, they all do the same thing, play games. Im not coughing up the extra dough for something I pretty much already have. Oh and yes, I could give a flip about a blu-ray player at this time and moment. Not even remotely justifies the price to me.

Exactly, I have no problems with anyone expressing their dislike for the price. It is really high that nothing IMO can justify the price of the game, but then again you had people speculating it'd be 900 dollars.

I really think the price will be a non-issue for me. Rarely do I acquire a gaming system right around the time after it launches. Eventually I'll be getting a PS3, but I'm not sure about the Wii or the XBOX 360.

The Big K is correct. A blue ray player cost around 1,000 but I dont want a blue ray player so 600 plus tax is a too expensive for me. Even if they drop the price in the near future it will still be a 500 plus tax system. Sony just priced me out of their next gen system.

sony's company is struggling outside of their gaming industry, why would they risk it all pushing this blue-ray crap driving up the price. i'm buying a next gen machine to play games, no rumble is a bigger deal to me then having blue-ray.

Re: PS3 Too Cheap -- Kutaragi

Prior to E3 I was all jazzed and ready to pre-order a PS3 as soon as my buds at EB gave the word for preorders. Sony talked me out of it and it had nothin to do with price.

Sony showed me zero, nada, nothin why their PS3 was much better or hell even slightly better than the 360 which I already have.

The 'No Rumble' in the controller was the deal breaker. Down the road i'll reassess a PS3 purchase when the price comes down a bit and somebody (Sony or Logitech) releases a controller with Rumble.

Re: PS3 Too Cheap -- Kutaragi

I think his logic is just a little faulty when he compares the PS3 price with the original PS2 price.

When the PS2 dropped there was just Nintendo, so the PS2 was light years ahead of that generation. Now we are already in the next-gen era with two other competitors who cost a lot less.

I'm having a hard time believing that sales will be "unthinkable" for the PS3 at its price point.

I can see it now at the register at Gamestop.

                $599.99 +
                $59.95 + (a game, if they are $60)
                $32.99 (MD state tax)
                ======
                $692.93

That's a lot of dough to play one game at launch.

I for one have been a supporter of both, but more for xbox as of late. For the fist time in my life, i want sony to fail, mainly becuase of arrogance. They act like their sh** dont stink, and we should just blindly throw a thousand bucks around to play their system, when they have shown us nothing to make us want it. The MGS trailer was nice, but it showed nothing of gameplay. That was about it. Everything else i heard or saw sounded like just high res ps2 games. So, sony, go ahead and price your self out of the next gen market, I for one will be more than happy to keep on playing my 360 and perhaps buy a Wii, but theres no way you are getting my 600+ bucks.

I forgot to add that most of the 100 Million PS2 install base will still have to buy an HDTV with an HDMI input jack (not cheap either) to actually see the next-gen differences.

The bad part about this is that I make enough for the price not to matter if it were an impulse buy. What's even worse is that there are titles on the other two consoles that are must haves for me.

I am a Sony diehard that will be picking up the PS3 as soon as it comes out. The price for me is pretty much where I figured it would be. As I stated in another thread, I expected to need $800 to purchase the console, an extra controller, and two games at launch. That seems to be the case.

As for Kutaragi saying its too cheap, well he's probably right. With all the advaced technology that is included inside the PS3, I would expect that Sony is taking a hit on the PS3 just like every other gaming company that launches a new console.

Microsoft lost money on the Xbox and 360
Sony lost money on the PSOne and PS2 at launch. It wasn't until I think its fifth year out that the PS2 finally started turning a profit.

Dont forget 40.00 for an extra controller + if you have HDMI or Component add another $40-$60 for a set of cables because I doubt High Quality cables will come with the PS3. Many people will probably by 2+ games, were talking over $850.

I don't want Sony to fail because competition is needed for business to thrive. But I want to see them get hit one way or another with this so they learn that they are not the only kid on the block, I still laugh at:

"Next Generation doesn't start until Sony has entered the fray". Not the exact quote, but you guys have heard it already from Phil's mouth. That's arrogance in my book and they are so full of themselves. NExt gen started my friend once Microsoft threw their hat in with the 360.

CB, I do agree that it's probably really cheap compared to the stand alone BR players. One thing that I do like about the design of the PS3 is that it's a one stop shop. You get a BR player, Gaming Machine, Media Center with the use of the different memory sticks/card, HDMI, Wifi, Harware BC, and etc.

With everything included I think is just right for the price, but I think that we are so used to paying $150-$400 for gaming machines over the last 25+ years that the $600 price tag is just not sitting right with hardcore gamers and this is just enough to chase away casual gamers. There are people out there that have no clue what Blue Ray is and aren't even ready for that format.
