Very well written, based on a 600-page analyst's report. Good food for thought, civil forum conversation, as I don't intend to provoke a flame war by posting this. Just thought it was a very interesting story.

I think Nintendo has the only real oppurtunity to be on top. They already have a hot handheld that hasn't released it's killer app(a real Pokemon game) and an affordable upcoming console modeled after that success. Japan is in the bag, and they'll also do hefty damage in the US.

The 360 will probably be very close to or surpass the PS3 in America, but I see the PS3 keeping pace due to it's bigger worldwide appeal. However, MS has no answer for the PS2(which can offset PS3 losses) and it would be difficult for MS to enter the handheld market at this point.

I really do think the high release price will hurt the PS3. The PS2 overtook Sega and Nintendo by getting itself into a huge number of houses and having a very extensive library. If me, a pretty avid gamer, is dissuaded by the price tag, what does the average gamer think?

The Wii has a great chance to come out of nowhere, though I'm not sure they have the library/3rd party games to make the huge overtaking. I think 360 will cut the lead of the PS3 in the very least, though the PS3 will do decent, just not dominate like the PS2 is.

I'm not totally sold on the USA one. The battle between Wii and 360 will be TIGHT. This isn't GameCube we're talking about.

I'd say PS3 will lead when all is said and done again by a fair amount. They have Europe pretty much locked up, Japan will probally split with Wii, and North America they'll take, though I'd expect 360 to be a lot closer than Xbox was this gen in that market.

I think the recent change in the cost of living in the USA will help the Wii. With prices rising faster than the paycheck the price and fun of the Wii will be appealing. The DS is a great example of Nintendo spreaidng the fun around to a mass audience. I think the PS3 and 360 will come down in price by next Xmas. Sony and MS should start lobbying congress for cheap alternative fuel so people will be able to afford their machines.

Great article, and very interesting. Here's what really is interesting to me. Sony is wanting to project the PS3 as a computer. I also read once where they said, and I paraphrase, "With the PS3, you don't need a home computer." That's a huge statement to make. Clearly, MS has the PC base, and Apple thereafter, but Sony is obviously wanting to project their PS3 as more than a gaming machine.

I'm not sure if that's the way to go. The high price, while it can be argued that it is worth it, has sort of made the PS3 unobtainable for some. Now, when you say, it's a computer, I'm wondering if that broadens the gap even more between those who "just want to game."

That leaves room for the Wii. Coming in at a very low price, reaching a more broad audience, and using innovative technology, may generate more interest from a more broad base. i've even thought of getting one for my son as it would be a great way to introduce him to gaming (he's almost 3).

I have an Xbox 360, and I decided on that simply because of its strong capabilities and performance on Xbox Live. To me the 360 has an advantage because it's reputation is that it is just as powerful as the PS3, yet more affordable. We've even heard Peter Moore joke about getting a Wii alongside the 360.

While the Playstation brand is huge, I just don't feel where they are coming from with the PS3. Especially with 2 solid alternatives, the PS3 (to me) needs to be a little more humble rather than claiming they can replace the home computer. There system will cater to the "hardcore" gamer and those who can afford to experiment with it. To me, that's not a very large base of consumers.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

The price point of the PS3 has put it out of my reach as well and I owned the PS1 and still use my PS2 exclusively. Just look at how much the PS2 is still selling with a cheap price point. Those same parents aren't ready to shell out that much money for the PS3. I still think the 360 is too expensive which has led to somewhat sluggish growth for them. Personally, I think the PS3 price due to the emphasis on Blue Ray will really hurt them. I also have no interest in the Wii and don't see it as a legitimate system for sports gamers. I also think the fact that the Wii can't touch the 360 or PS3 in terms of power will also hurt them. Their kid game Mario series etc will probably do well but I don't see it doing much better than the Gamecube although its just my opinion. I see the 360 winning in a crowded market place that will have people questioning the future of the console market when all is said and done.

I don't think the Wii is gonna do as good as some people seem to think. I think the 360 will own America, but Japan still belongs to Sony.

Agreed. The Wii is a last gen console with a funky controller. It's a novelty item, not a serious contender for market leader.

It might be last-gen in terms of graphics, but it's definitely next-gen in terms of controller interface and its effect on gameplay. The PS3 and Xbox 360 offer absolutely nothing new in that area.

Agreed on the 360, but it's my understanding that the PS3's controller will have at least some of the motion sensing capabilities of the Wii.

True, but rather limited. Nowhere near the complete range of motion of the Wii controller, from what I've read.

And is it true that the PS3 controller won't have vibration or rumble effects? I thought I read that somewhere. That would be nuts if true.

Team Xbox has a feature/predictions on the console wars

                              http://editorials.teamxbox.com/xbox/...rystal-Ball/p1

Here's a winner I never hear mentioned: The Consumer

There's something for everybody between the 3 systems.

Because I don't own stock or work for Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony, I don't care who "wins" the console war.

I hope all 3 succeed because the more competition that is out there, the better it is for the consumer.

5 years from now in the North American market I see:

                              1) Xbox 360
                              2) PS3
                              3) Wii

It's hard to compare sales when Microsoft had a one year lead on the competition.
